I got half way through and it was just too boring and miserable. While it might be an accurate and rich portrayal of Venice and Istanbul in the 1800s, nothing of note happening for 5 hours was a bit too much for me.

I couldn't finish it

The story and the narration transported me to their time and place. I could smell the spices and the decay. Enriched my concepts of Istanbul and Venice and their historical context.
