Story
On a snowy winter evening in 1982, 21-year-old Mary Brown accepted a ride from a handsome stranger in the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The trip ended with her brutally beaten and raped. Mary survived, but her predator's violence had only just begun. After 10 years in prison, Tom Luther was released a far more vicious criminal. Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap.

Stephen Smith is the boy who did not exist. Born out of wedlock in the early 1960s, Steve's parents - both devout Catholics - had felt so 'shamed' by their son's illegitimate birth that they hid him away from the world by locking him in the cellar...for 13 years. Apart from a few admissions to hospital as a result of his 'imprisonment', Steve remained in the coal cellar of the family home where he was deprived of daylight, his childhood, school and human contact until he'd reached his teenage years.

When Jade Kelly met her new foster mother, she thought her prayers had been answered. Kindly Carol Docherty was everything her violent, drug-addicted mother was not. Loving and nurturing, she fed and clothed 10-year-old Jade and offered a life free of fear from near constant abuse. Or so Jade thought. As soon as social workers in Lancashire stopped their regular checks on Jade’s progress, Carol turned. The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Story
From the outside, there was no reason to suspect the family life of young schoolchild Keri was anything but unremarkable. Two loving parents, a backdrop of 1960s Britain; life had provided for her, at least with the riches of modesty. Keri herself however, would often confound teachers with her erratic behaviour, which was at best sullen and withdrawn; at worst violently disruptive. When challenged, she would only exacerbate her growing reputation as a fantasist; weaving terrible tales about the "abuse" she was suffering at the hands of her very creators.

Story
A little before midnight on May 30, 1997, 14-year-old Brandy DuVall waited at a bus stop in the Denver area for a ride back to her grandparents' home after spending the evening at a friend’s home. She was wearing a bright-red Chicago Bulls jersey bearing the number of her favorite player Michael Jordan. It was the shirt, a favorite of the Bloods gang, that attracted the five young gang members in the car that circled the block and came back to where she stood.
Publisher's Summary
Before domestic violence hotlines and safe houses were widespread, June Briand shot four bullets into her husband's head and was sentenced to 15 years to life. This is the shocking, true story of survival - and the intense bond June shared with her pathologically violent husband, a monster who physically and sexually tortured, degraded, and dominated her so relentlessly she refused to believe he was dead even after she killed him.
What kind of woman would slay her own husband? What kind of man would drive her to do it? Why didn't she just leave him?
Based on hundreds of hours interviewing June Briand, speaking with her lawyers, and poring over countless pages of court transcripts, police and hospital records, and interviews with virtually every key person involved with this case, the author explores those difficult questions while exposing the twisted dynamics of a relationship that enslaves a woman - and drives her to kill the beast she loved when she was finally out of hope, out of time, and out of her mind.
At once terrifying and maddening, heartrending and ultimately exhilarating - including an unforgettable glimpse inside a maximum-security prison - The Beast I Loved is an audiobook you won't soon forget.

A stunning, moving and emotional true story.
This is a book that was almost impossible to (put down) pause. A heartbreaking and tragic story of one women's horrific upbringing which was compounded by the terrible injustice of being sentenced for murder and serving 10 years in prison. A must read. While listening to this story one cannot help but to think about the many thousands of other women suffering domestic violence abuse who will never get the opportunity to escape their situations.

Beyond Beast . . .
I’m sure many readers by now probably know at least ONE person who has been (or is) abused, but often we never know all the details of what they endure. In this book, you will get a real glimpse of just HOW BAD it can get. On a daily basis. This is extreme bullying . . .but that bully NEVER leaves the playground. The story of what this poor girl went through will leave you horrified and angry at the same time. Wow. There may be other books written about abuse cases, but this was my first. Some of the methods The Beast used hopefully will serve as a pre-warning to those out there that recognize some of the early signs. For June, she chose the only option she thought was available to her. But was that truly the end of all her misery? Totally worth the credit to find out! This book kept me absolutely riveted. Not one dull or boring moment start to finish. Kevin Pierce narrating gave this a genuine realness, as he always does. Even when quoting the words of others, you can feel the intended emotion without him having to resort to mimicking anyone’s voice. Perfect. I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for an honest review, and would have GLADLY bought this anyways. It’s a keeper.

Depravity, Revenge, Injustice, and Humanity
Nothing could have prepared me for what my ears would hear while being held captive to this extraordinary story. As a child of abuse and witness to maternal abuse, I needed to take this story in bites. Unfortunately, a helpless woman or child is being beaten as you read this review. In fact, a child or woman will die at the hands of a man while you read this book. A child is defenseless, a woman can get to the point where she too is defenseless. It's not as simple as picking up the phone. When a sociopath tells you he will kill you if you leave him/ her.... they mean exactly that. So many lives are tarnished, and ended because the cycle of abuse doesn't stop. This story pinpoints, with magnifying precision, the psychology of the cycle. If at any point you find yourself laughing during the narration in excess, please refer to Dr. Robert Hare's Psychopathy Checklist. If you are a survivor of spousal, childhood, sexual, or a combination, proceed with caution, but please proceed. Thank You "June".

It's Amazing She Survived
For most of us it's hard to understand how someone could stay in such a horrible situation but this book explains it well. For June Briand it really started when she was born and the circumstances that molded her very early in life. The public needs to know about abuse and the ramifications of it. So many lives are affected, not just the participants. I wish this woman all the best going forward. She's amazing! Kevin Pierce is my very favorite narrator of true crime. He's the best!

A Death Too Good
I believe the title should have been "A Death Too Good" as this sub-human beast deserved to die slowly and painfully and in a very humiliating public fashion. As far as I'm concerned he got off easy. When I first found out that a male was narrating this story I was not pleased. Since there was nothing I could do about it I settled in and grew to appreciate the narrator; he did a very good job. This story leaves out no detail which may or may not be a good thing for some listeners. For those who are abused or know of someone being abused you get to go inside the mind of someone that can reveal why they stay. I was abused but mostly financially, some physically and a lot mentally. It's a mind game and before you know it you are brain-washed into thinking you need this person even though you would soar and do 100% better without them even if you left naked and slept in the fields - you will do better without them but after awhile you just can't see it. In June's case someone verbalized that she would be better off without him and than tiny instance opened a fracture of a thought into her now sickened mind. That's why the abuser isolates you, so you don't get outside input that brings you back to reality. God bless June as she moves forward in life.

Battered women syndrome
Never have I listened to an audiobook that brought tears to my eyes. In all my 65 years I have been lucky to never have experienced such a horrific experience in my life and now I understand just how and why women stay in this kind of relationship it’s not a choice of their on but a choice of survival. I pray June has been able to reconnect with her children and have a positive impact on their life. I’m happy that she found a man who will treat her with the respect she so deserves. Wonderfully written. I received this free of charge from the author or narrator for an honest review.
