Publisher's Summary
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Beast Awakens by Joseph Delaney, read by Lee Ingleby.
They heard shouting and cries of fear. Crafty looked down the slope and realised what had happened to cause so much panic. Without warning, the dark wall of the Shole had advanced.
Crafty can't remember a time before the Shole - the terrifying mist that has engulfed most of Britain, leaving those trapped in it to either die or be transformed into horrifying monsters: the aberrations. Crafty has been stuck in his family's cellar for nearly a year, his only companions his restless, whispering dead brothers and an unusually friendly aberration he names the Bog Queen.
But then Crafty's life abruptly changes. He is ordered to report to the Castle, where he will train as a gate grub - operators of magical portals that allow the mysterious guild of Gatemancers to explore within the Shole. It is a dangerous job, with a very short life expectancy....
To survive, Crafty will have to use every inch of his cunning - whatever the cost.

Brilliant, as always
As always, Delaney delivers an engaging, entertaining, and semi-spooky tale filled with wonderful characters and supernatural/fantasy fun. I am thrilled that we get to enter this world after The Spook's Apprentice finished. Although this is not the same universe, it has the same appeal. The narrator also does a fine job, though the near whisper volume almost did me in in the beginning. It was too low to listen in the car until the volume increased. Cannot wait for the next installment!

very similar to spooks apprentice
mr Delaney is a good enough story teller but this book matched spooks apprentice a little too much for my liking. I will listen to book 2 but I fear I will see Spoiler alert ............. ....... that the main character continues to be continuously saved by his female allies over and over just like Tom Ward.

Joseph Delaney is always good.
He's a really good author. You can let your kids read it and they may get a little scared but not usually. The biggest problem is that he writes kind of slow so you are going to be waiting a while for the next book.

Emmersive and enchanting
A magnificent book, I listened to this book as a precursor to my daughter reading it, I myself being 38 years old, and although intending on just checking a few chapters to check for suitability became emmersed in the story and its mythology. The events are all based in real places and the fantastical elements seem just as tangible as the locations they take place in. The author has done an excellent job at building a world you can't help but believe in an a hero you want to shield from all the things happening to him, although I suspect, with a little help from his friends, he will be just fine. A word of appreciation also needs to go out to the narrator, an passionate performance perforated by the individual voices he provides each character with, none of which seem ridiculous or dramatic despite each having distinct and dramatic dialects and mannerisms.

Joseph Delaney is so underrated. Another amazing tale with so much breadth in another dark fantasy. Hope Hollywood does not get hold of this one, to underperform upon. Hope many sequels for another sinister world of imagination, humour, pathos and horror!
