The classic story of paradise found - and lost.

Richard lands in East Asia in search of an earthly utopia. In Thailand he is given a map promising an unknown island, a secluded beach - and a new way of life.

What Richard finds when he gets there is breathtaking: more extraordinary, more frightening than his wildest dreams. But how long can paradise survive here on Earth? And what lengths will Richard go to in order to save it?

Alfie Allen is Reek from game of thrones

If your wondering if Alfie Allen can pull off a convincing performance, he can. Doesn't disappoint for a moment. Alex Garland, I'm sure, would be happy.

5 stars.

one of the few books lately that has grabbed and held my attention since I started till I finished. really a lot less like the movie than I was expecting which was welcomed and refreshing. The depth of writing was also far greater than I was expecting. it actually felt like the perfect candidate for a late high school or university literary essay. Narration by Alfie Allen was superb and he nails all the accents except that of Jesses but I still give him credit for trying.

Massively Impressed

Where does The Beach rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book really shocked me. I can't normally reread books or read books that have been made into a film but this was great. It's so different to the book and leaves you reeling at the end.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jed.
I felt like he was quietly the sane, caring character.

What about Alfie Allen’s performance did you like?

I love Alfie's accent and accents. I would listen to more of his books.

Any additional comments?

It was fascinating to listen to such a gradual progression to insanity. I would recommend this to anyone.
Great travelling book too.

Great book. Amazing narration!

I’m not usually one to post reviews but I’ve just finished listening to The Beach &, wow, Alfie Allen (aka Theon Greyjoy & also Lily Allen’s brother)’s narration was truly fantastic! I’ve listened to over 30 audiobooks over the past 7 months (I often listen while I’m working) & his narration was right up there in the top 3 or 4. The various accents (English, French, South African, Thai, Scottish, Kiwi, American, etc...) are always spot-on, & each & every character has their own distinctive voice & inflections (very impressive given there are over 20 “speaking” characters throughout the book). Alfie’s tone & cadence are silky smooth & do justice to this great book, which is so well written & which tells an amazing story which, for me, brought back fond memories of travel & the stuff I got up to in my late teens & early twenties at the turn of the century. Very enjoyable & I strongly recommend you listen to this one if you’ve not yet had the chance. Well worth a credit, or even the 15 bucks if you’re out of credits.

While a good book, the movie is much better.

In this instance, the movie adaptation is a lot better, conceived and believable overall. Be sure to see it if you have not already done so.

Great adventure read

A really good read. A modern adventure with lord of the flies undertones. I enjoyed the style of Garland’s writing.

More of a documentary of a young hippie

Far too much unnecessary swearing and blasphemy and very dull. Very drawn out.? Not a good representation of a very beautiful country. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Must read before you die

Alex Garland paints the journey of a young man in search of a form of paradise. The main character dances off of the pages and haunts the reader/listener long after travelling with him on his journey. The world Garland creates is authentic to the point that one gets trapped in it for a short while and wonders if Garland isn't merely retelling a personal experience. The element of surrealism and the exploration of the main character's subconscious is as fantastical as it is disturbing. "The Beach" is an investigation of a young man's conscious, self-identified 'want' and the uncomfortable discovery of his subconscious 'need'. Garland's work is captivating to say the least.

Loved the English

All in all an extremely well written book. Didn't care about the characters that much, but I loved the book for the witty language.

The film made me hesitate...

but I needn't have. There's enough variation on the movie to maintain a feeling of discovery and surprise. Plus the narration is first class.

JUST BRILLIANT

Read the book a few years ago and the audio version is even better. The narration is excellent , just how I would imagine Richard [the teller of the story] would speak. All the accents of the various characters are so well done.

Surpassed all expectations. Unputdownable.

Ive seen the beach film a few times and always enjoy the fantasy of the storyline so even though i roughly knew what was going to happen it did not make me enjoy this book any less. It is very well written and absolutely surpasses the film. I could not leave it alone and would thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting an easy read to be immersed into a travellers life in Asia.

20 years waiting for this audiobook!

Any additional comments?

20 years waiting for this audiobook! I can’t believe it was 20 years ago this came out, it was all the talk of my pals and I one summer when we were all 16. I read the book about 3 times and loved it every time.

The Audio edition is great but only slightly let down by the narrators poor Scottish accent when doing the Daffy Character. I am Scottish and when the accent is butchered I find it irritating. Other than that he did a pretty solid job.

A Wonderfully Dark Tale & Accomplished Narrator.

The Beach transports you to an idyllic island which quickly turns from a tranquil haven into something much more sinister. The story draws you in with an authentic Thai feel & compounds this with compelling characters & an unsettling sinister element. Alfie Allen does an amazing job; his versatility in performing the different characters is a joy to listen to. This is one of my favourite audio books: highly recommended!

Great read

I saw the movie before reading the book like most people probably. The book is very well read by the narrator, and well written. It is similar to the movie but more depth as you would expect, and no cheesy Hollywood scenes unlike the movie. There are plenty of differences to the movie too. Overall it’s a great read and a lot better than the cheesy Hollywood Americanized mess that the movie was.

Alfie Allen is perfect for this book

Always wanted to read this book. The story is great, very well paced and a great array of characters. But the thing that makes this audiobook is Alfie Allen. His narration is extremely good, nailing the varied accents well, and he really sounds like the voice you’d expect to hear from Richard. Highly recommended.
