Publisher's Summary
You trust her with your family. Would you trust her with your life?
Mark and Melissa Cain are thrilled to have found Jade, a babysitter who is brilliant with their young children. Having seen her own house burn to the ground, Jade needs them as much as they need her. Moving Jade into the family home can only be a good thing, can’t it?
As Mark works long hours as a police officer and Melissa struggles with running a business, the family become ever more reliant on their babysitter, who is only too happy to help. And as Melissa begins to slip into depression, it’s Jade who is left picking up the pieces.
But Mark soon notices things aren’t quite as they seem. Things at home feel wrong, and as Mark begins to investigate their seemingly perfect sitter, what he discovers shocks him to his core. He’s met Jade before. And now he suspects he might know what she wants …
Mark is in a race against time to protect his family. But what will he find as he goes back to his family home?
If you loved reading The Girl on the Train, Behind Closed Doors and The Sister, you’ll love the suspense of The Babysitter. This unpausable listen will have you turning the pages until way after dark.

What a waste of 10 hours and 33 seconds

A story that's hard to put down
I listened to this in two sittings as the story was intriguing. I would have preferred that the ending was final, rather than it being left open for a sequel (?). Also, the narrator was good for the most part but she made glaringly obvious mispronunciations of some words which I found jarring to the ear.

I Think The Term is “Nanny...”
...or very naughty nanny in the case of The Babysitter, who enters the lives of one poor family intent on destruction and hell-bent on snagging the hapless, innocent and horse-blind husband for herself, and oh, yeah- she wants a baby, too. And maybe a sister. But she does NOT want the hapless, naive and slowly crumbling, mentally deconstructing wife in the picture. Enter some fairly clever ways to infiltrate the family, take over mothering duties by slowly incapacitating Mom, and inch her way into wifely duties, too. Did I mention there’s a kidnapping case going on? Dad’s a high-up police detective who works 9-5 and takes a lot of time off to care for his suddenly nuts wife while the case lingers in the ether unsolved and Dad-Detective’s smart cop partner is stymied by the stupidness of this family. Plenty of gratuitous sex, innuendo, cliche and annoying cutesy baby-talk. And the correct term for a live-in full -time child carer is ‘nanny.’ That bugged me! While the narration was good (except for annoying kid which isn’t her fault) I would pass this one over as predictable and pedestrian- there are better psychological thrillers out there.

How stupid were these parents!!!!!!!
I'm sorry but this book started out very good but as I read on I was so annoyed with how unbelievably STUPID!!!! These two parents were. what kind of parent just hire some random woman to watch her two children without doing a background check. They knew this woman for a grand total of one day and they ask her to be there live in babysitter. All this woman had to do was say she had degrees in some form of childcare and they say "ok move in watch over our little baby and young child" And all this without a background check. And the father was a cop so he should already know better. And also that young child couldn't have been more Irritating. She was working at my nerves every time she spoke. I almost didn't finish the book because the kid was so annoying. I'm sorry but so many things about this book were so beyond the realm of reality. It wasn't horrible, but I don't think I would read again. I was very excited when I read the reviews because it sounded really good, but I didn't agree. But to each his own

Could not get into it.
I tried several times to listen to this book and I just could not get into the storyline. I did not finish this book and that is unusual for me, I will usually keep with one until the end. This book reminded me a lot of the movie with Rebecca DeMornay called The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.

Tingling and frightening
(As posted in GoodReads) The psychological games were tangible and horrible! It reminded me of the movie "Gaslight". But the disturbing thing for me was it seemed like I knew all along what was happening and what was going to happen – almost as if it was all full of obvious actions and circumstances. I had to go through my past reviews to make sure I hadn't already read and rated it :-(. In any event, it was still a good story that had me looking forward to each subsequent time when I listened to more. I would have given it four stars except for that strange feeling that I must've read it before, although I'm relatively certain that I didn't.

Great book
I really enjoyed the book. It was fast paced and kept me yelling at Mark and Mel. I couldn’t believe they were that easily fooled. Especially since he’s a detective. And as always, communication is so very important in relationships!! So much could’ve been solved if they would’ve talked to each other about things. The book definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.

Definitely Entertaining with Excellent Narration!
I thought really enjoyed listening to this book. The narration was excellent and I could clearly follow the different characters. To some readers that found this unrealistic I disagree. As a psychologist obsession, delusional thinking, and depression were accurately portrayed. This is an important part of psychological thrillers for me. All in all give it a try. If your not connected by the 5th chapter and dont like it try something else. I was hooked!

This book was destroyed by the narrator rushing through it, no emotion just spat out sentences at the same high angst which seemed to always include one of the following.... 'incredulous looks', 'gulping back nausea', 'gulping back tears' or 'gulping back huge snotty sobs' oh give me a break!!

A great book
I loved this book. Great characters, a good plot and brilliant narration. We knew from the start what was going on and who but the suspense came through the build up of increasing dangerous behaviours and hearing the increasing desperation as things get out of the main characters control.... Not knowing how things would be resolved etc Would definitely recommend. Hooked from the start.

Too much Tell and no Show
Way too much is given away in the summary and you might be left thinking what's the point of reading this story at all. Also the summary isn't accurate as Mark doesn't find out who Jade is until the very end. Too much info was very jarring and Jade/Grace's internal psychological turmoil could have been less tell and more show to keep you wondering. A suggestion would be that you were kept guessing between Jade and Melissa by perhaps tapping more into Melissa's depression and paranoia that she was imagining it all and the reveal of who Jade is at the end. That said, the characterisation was good and Tamsin Kennard a brilliant and suitable narrator is what kept me listening to the end.
