About this listen

Sometimes life doesn’t go exactly to plan...

London accountant Sophie unexpectedly becomes the stand-in mum for her estranged sister’s eight-month-old baby, Alana. She didn’t even know she had a niece! She’s wildly out of her depth.

Then her life is turned upside down all over again by the appearance of a Thor lookalike on her doorstep. Apparently, six-foot surfer Samson is Alana’s father. And he also just discovered the existence of this adorable baby.

Sophie is not prepared to hand over her niece to an equally clueless stranger, so they come up with a plan: Sophie and Alana will move into Samson’s spare bedroom in Brighton until they work out what to do.

As they settle into changing nappies and nighttime feeds, Sophie finds it hard to ignore the way her heart somersaults whenever Samson looks at her. But he already has a girlfriend, who’s made it very clear that Sophie and Alana are in the way.

The more Samson and Sophie bond with little Alana, they can’t ignore the obvious attraction between them. But can they put their feelings aside and stick to the plan?

This heartwarming summer romance is perfect for fans of Phoebe MacLeod, Laura Starkey, Beth Moran, Freya Kennedy, Kathryn Freeman and Maxine Morrey.

A lovely story with a heartwarming feel. I would have liked it to be longer with more character development. They were quite likeable but weren’t developed enough to really fall in love with. Excellent narration.

Sweet and relatively short. I’ll definetly listen to this author again but I certainly didn’t love it enough to want to pay for it.

What a beautiful storyline. I loved this book from beginning to end. So well written I laughed and cried. Lovely easy listen.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, but unfortunately it fell completely flat for me. The story felt less “light-hearted” and more disconnected from reality. I was particularly surprised to learn that the author is a parent herself, as some of the key elements around motherhood felt completely unrealistic to the point of being delusional, especially the way serious themes were inteoduce with such lack of heart, and how quickly a young baby seemed to adjust to entirely new caregivers without any real emotional depth explored.

If you’re looking for a story that reflects any slithers of the realities of early motherhood, this isn’t it. The narrative leans so heavily into idealism that it is difficult (impossible?) to connect with. Even the relationships and character responses felt overly convenient, boring and lacking authenticity.

I kept waiting for something genuine; some emotional depth, tension, or meaningful development; but it never quite arrived. The narration didn’t help either; I found myself speeding it up just to stay engaged (or to get theough it maybe).

I enjoy light, escapist reads, but this felt more like a poorly told fairytale than an uplifting story. Overall, it left me disappointed, like a weak, cold cup of tea that’s far too milky and lacking any real flavour.
