Publisher's Summary

In the 1500s an almanac full of magic spells was put together by someone intent on bringing about the End Times. It has resurfaced and is being used indiscriminately.

An unexpected lunar eclipse. A poisonous fog that cripples the capital. Statues that weep blood.

As the catalogue of calamities mount, fear and paranoia provoke rumours of terrorist attacks. But from whom?

History professor Juliet Harrington is an authority on 16th-century mysticism and a long-time believer in the existence of the Almanac of Forbidden Wisdom, a potent spellbook. Legend insists it was compiled in that period by a cabal of powerful occultists. Its magic is summoned only at disastrous cost, signalled by the Auguries. Juliet is convinced that the recent plague of disasters means someone reckless is using the book - and she has little time left to stop them.

A Little Unbelievable.

Obviously this is horror/thriller/action on a large and immaginitve scale, and I applaud that. The unbelievable aspect comes in how the characters react so ponderously to an emergency of such scope. It quite detracted from the sense of pace - more a walk than a heart pounding sprint.
I also struggled with the inclusion of autism as a necessary descriptor when it seemed to be based on stereotypes of enhanced intelligence and lack of empathy/sympathy. It felt degrading and scapegoatish in the context used in the novel.

Awful narration. Had to send it back

So disappointed. FG Cottams books have been so beautifully read by David Rintoul, Sean Barrett and others. I was really pleased that another of his books had been released on audible but I can’t listen to it for a moment longer. Naomi Frederick reads it in such a bland over pronounced, deliberate way that it’s painful to listen to. She over emphasise every word at the expense of the characters. You don’t get any sense of who they are or any flow. She sounds like an elderly school teacher reading to a bored classroom. Such a shame

should be fiction feels like current affairs

in the current Covid lockdown/here comes Armageddon world we all inhabit this story didn't feel extreme in the slightest...I suspect if I'd read it a couple of years ago it might have done but in this climate of early 2021 I don't think I would be surprised in the slightest at the events which unfold. The story runs along at a good pace...interesting characters...only slight downer is a bit of a damp squib ending...might have needed a bigger bang ...that said still enjoyed it a lot as I always have FGC's other work.

terrible narration

I really enjoy this author but this narration was so bad I almost couldn't finish listening to it. it felt as though I was listening to a children's book! terrible. Will avoid this narrator and she really spoilt this book for me.

Do not waste your credits on this.

I'm sorry to say the story was pants and the narration just added to the boredom. I kept on listening thinking it would get better or "kick in" as the story was so promising but it just didn't and the ending made me think what a load of tosh.
Sorry.

poor sound quality

for a new recording the quality of the audio is surprisingly poor. it's very muffled sounding.
The premise sounded good but the writing hasn't been wholly believable and hasn't dragged me in at all.

No Stephen King!

I have read/listened to all of F.G. Cottam's books on Audible and enjoyed them all (The Lazarus Prophecy & The Waiting Room being my favourites) but was rather disappointed with this one. It did not help that the book I finished just before was the latest book from Stephen King. And I have to say it, as much as I usually enjoy Mr Cottam, he is no Stephen King!
I felt the plot and particularly the dialogue were just not up to it.
It reminded me at times of a book aimed at teenagers!
