About this listen

He's their lawyer. He's their insider. He's their spy.

Kyle McAvoy grew up in his father’s small-town law office in York, Pennsylvania. He excelled in college, was elected editor-in-chief of The Yale Law Journal, and his future has limitless potential.

But Kyle has a secret, a dark one, an episode from college that he has tried to forget. The secret, though, falls into the hands of the wrong people, and Kyle is forced to take a job he doesn’t want - even though it’s a job most law students can only dream about.

Three months after leaving Yale, Kyle becomes an associate at the largest law firm in the world, where, in addition to practicing law, he is expected to lie, steal, and take part in a scheme that could send him to prison, if not get him killed.

With an unforgettable cast of characters and villains - from Baxter Tate, a drug-addled trust-fund kid and possible rapist, to Dale, a pretty but seemingly quiet former math teacher who shares Kyle’s “cubicle” at the law firm, to two of the most powerful and fiercely competitive defence contractors in the country - and featuring all the twists and turns that have made John Grisham the most popular storyteller in the world, The Associate is vintage Grisham.

Great story. Shit narrator. Could've been better. I'm still talking because Audible won't accept a review that is less than 15 words long. Maybe my next review should be of Audible...

A simple review made difficult

The narrator didn’t make a boring book exciting. The storyline was mundane & had real plot.

Very bland & rather boring.

Had a good plot - nicely building up - and then fell completely flat at the end unlike other Grisham novels. No resolution, either to the main character or the plot line and no good revealing twists and turns. I was anticipating a really interesting finale … it fell completely flat.

Let down by the ending

The audiobook was very exciting. It was filled with twists and turns and the unexpected murder. However I didn't like the ending of where Benny just disappeared. But maybe Grisham would like to weave that in a next book.

An exciting story

the cloak & dagger stuff ran out a couple of books ago. this was just juvenile and silly & totally unbelievable.
probably should have left the Firm alone

spy stuff

The premise is good, but the story never takes off. It starts slow, stays slow, and then ends rather suddenly with no satisfaction for the reader at all. The only redeeming quality is the narrator, who puts in a good performance.

A trudging slog with a copout ending
