About this listen

Best-selling author Howard Fast’s straightforward introduction to Zen meditation

Howard Fast began to formally practice Zen meditation after turning away from communism in 1956. The Art of Zen Meditation, originally published by the antiwar political collective Peace Press, in 1977, is the fruit of Fast’s study: a brief and instructive history of Zen Buddhism and its tenets, written with a simplicity that is emblematic of the philosophy itself. Fast’s study of Zen also inspired his popular Masao Masuto mystery series about a Zen Buddhist detective in Beverly Hills, which he published under the pseudonym E. V. Cunningham.

The narration for this audiobook was great. However, any seasoned Zen practitioner will immediately know that this description of Zen is a bit odd, and not really Zen meditation but a general mixture of mindfulness type practices, with some unusual bits added. The real kicker is the authors recommendation to check out J.Krishnamurti if interested in further Zen. That’s probably the furthest advice from Zen one could possibly receive.. JK being the polar opposite of anything practical or related to the ordinariness of Zen. Anyhow, worth a listen as it’s only 35 mins.

Good narration, not much Zen

A very short read introducing beginners to Zen meditation, with what seemed like half the book was an interesting biography about the author.
