They thought the killer had no motive. But these murders are not what they seem . . .

On 15th June 1994, Travis Green - husband, father, upstanding citizen - walked through the streets of Hartstead and killed eleven of his neighbours. The last victim was little Cassie Colman's father.

As the twenty-fifth anniversary approaches, Cassie tries to forget the past - even as her mother struggles to remember it at all. Then, something hidden in her mother's belongings suggests the murders were not as random as everyone believes.

Cassie can't stop herself digging up the past. But someone will do anything to keep it buried . . .

There are some people who will find this book utterly 10/10 even 11/10. For those of us who are a bit jaded - it is not predictable - but a overworn trope that surely has had it's day. Really, the formula is too obvious and that really spoils it a little for me. So if you like "Genre Fiction" you'll love this, so definitely give it a go, because it does come together very well. One other note of disappointment and again this is very personal, I found the timbre of Hattie Ladbury's voice very confusing. She is a brilliant narrator and handles the genders and differentiations with excellence. However, and this may have been just me, I spent the entirety of the book thinking she was over 55 and wondering why a woman of that age was chosen to narrate a first person protagonist narrative when the character was supposed to be decades younger. It became really irritating and definitely interfered with my enjoyment of an otherwise reasonable book. (I did a Google search when I finished the book. Vale Hattie )

Mixed Bag

The narration and actual writing deserve 5 Stars but, the story not so much. Truthfully, I am not really sure what story I was actually listening to. The mystery of the anniversary that promised so much, just petered out. I am left with the nagging question; was the anniversary really the story or was it Cassy's journey as a daughter and single mother. The whole thing reminded me of a long meandering river that inextricably moves forward but eventually disappears without making much impact.
I don't know whether I liked this book or not.

I really think men should have to attend some kind of therapy before marriage my ex 30 years of demestic Voilence . It's a pitty so many woman and children are kept captive by the person that suppose to love them 😭😭😭
