Publisher's Summary

Ex-Chicago cop and new PI Josie Harper has been hired by an outside group to clear the name of publisher Lauren Wade, recently acquitted of the murder of her lover. That means finding the real killer, a task made more difficult by Lauren's unwillingness to cooperate and a large family problem - Lauren's parents have been kidnapped for a ransom she can no longer pay. Josie has a big challenge of her own: how to redeem herself after losing her job as a detective. When Josie and Lauren join forces to rescue the parents, they discover they make a great team in more ways than one. Will Josie's troubled past come back to haunt her? And who did kill Lauren's lover?

Some People

This is one of those offbeat books with a few unexpected twists and turns and very few likable characters. The central character PI Josie Harper is an ex police officer who lost her job when her bipolar disorder spiraled her into a manic cycle that culminated in Harper's attempt to pick up her 60 year old female captain. She is a member of the family from hell and has a really checkered relationship history; much of that due to her illness. Her client has the type of family that makes Josie's look great in comparison and most of the characters who spend much of their time in the local lesbian bar are seriously bizarre. Not bizarre in the same sense that Carl Hiaasen's characters are bizarre; quirky to the point of parody, but needing medication bizarre. The climatic scene is something of a shocker but considering the first seven hours it did have a certain sort of logic. This is a book that could have been a colossal pile of garbage but the author is good enough that it works; okay in spots, very good for much of the story.

want to love a villain?

Josie Harper is a lesbian and has a new job as p.i. Just as she's filling her new office w furniture from Ikea, Sara walks in and hands Josie her first murder case. Who killed Kelly? Lauren Wade, a cool, beautiful blonde has already been tried and acquitted of that murder. Still, something is odd about this cool character. and from there Josie and her cast of characters take us through a tangled and satisfying mystery.
it is hard not to fall for Josie and harder to resist Lauren Wade. I loved it.

Good writer; good narrator

I wanted to give this book 1 star short of 5 stars only because I wish it had a different ending. The writing was spectacular as was the narration. I couldn't put the damned thing down but when it was finally over I felt a little deflated because I really wanted a different ending for the main character but it all made sense in the end of why it had to be the way it was. I can't punish the author for writing an ending I wouldn't have after all it wasn't my story to tell. Good job Anne and Tatiana.

Even better than a whodunit! A "why"dunit?

What I love about "The Acquittal" (and all of Anne Laughlin's mysteries) is the mix of a murder plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat and the intricate psychological mystery she constructs. What would it take for an average woman (and average lesbian) to do awful things? Or did she?

The effortless flow of Laughlin's writing is spot-on, finding just the right way to draw you deep into the story and sometimes even laugh out loud. Great book for an afternoon on the beach or an evening by the fireplace.

Difficult to discern characters.

I listen to about 3 books s month and this was one of the most confusing and difficult to stay attentive that I have listened to recently. Nice story line but many characters got confusing and were difficult to follow. Would have been better read on pages.

not my cup of tea

i am not a fan of self serving bumbling heros. in RL she would have been dangerous to friends, partners and any in her path. and good grief the lesbian drop into the bed at a drop of a hat got old. but I guess that's an easy out instead of actually doing a storyline in which a relationship is cultivated beyond the libido

The Acquittal

My personal feelings is that this would have been an excellent book if concentration had been on the story, instead of the sex. While I don't mind sex in a book, this was to me too much and the actual story was lost and it was a good one. Tue narration was good.

Good book!

It was a good book. I felt there was some unfinished plot line with the brother and the parents. I liked Josie and valiant efforts to keep her mental illness under control. Lauren was a mystery to me until the very end,

Good narration but lousy storyline

Good narration but story didn’t make any sense, the whole story you are going to wonder why nobody has common sense in the book.

Five stars

Surprising how good some of the ‘included in my subscription’ audible stories are and then in this case disappointed to not see another audible story by this author. Well darn. Quirky characters, action, and plot twists galore. Narration well done, too. Highly recommended. Wish this were a series with more stories waiting on audible.

Worth the listen!!!

Well written and full of surprises. The story evolves at a good pace with no dull bits and the end is far from predicted.

Tatiana Sokolov has a great voice or voices and performs well.

Well worth a second listen. The audio book was an "included" Audible download and unfortunately seems to be the only Anne Laughlin book available in audiobook.
