Story
When Jo Brand hosted Have I Got News For You late last year, her calm explanation of the effects of sexism on women to a bemused all-male cast turned into a viral phenomenon. There has been a whole tradition of books over hundreds of years where a father shares his wisdom with his son - started by Lord Chesterfield in the 18th century - while women have been silent (aka bullied into thinking their advice wasn't worth writing down). This book puts a stop to all that.

Well hello to you dear audiobook browser. Now I have your attention it would be rude if I didn't tell you a little about my literary feast. So, here is the thing: is it just me or does anyone else find that adulthood offers no refuge from the unexpected horrors, peculiar lack of physical coordination and sometimes unexplained nudity, that accompanied childhood and adolescence? I am proud to say I have a wealth of awkward experiences - from school days to life as an office temp - and here I offer my 18-year-old self (and I hope you, too, dear listener) some much needed caution and guidance on how to navigate life's rocky path.

Story
The mystery of Elizabeth Keane's father is one that has never been solved by the people of Buncarragh - not for lack of speculation. Her mother, Patricia, had been assumed a spinster until she began dating a mysterious man from out of town and within months had left Buncarragh and had married. Less than two years later, Patricia was back, with a new baby in her arms but no new husband by her side and unbendingly silent about her recent past. A secret she would take with her to her grave.

Story
'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'.

Despite himself, the vicar was impressed. And from then on he couldn’t get enough of the spotlight, even when it always seemed to avoid him. Throughout his teens, he and his Dad trudged up and down towards London....

Publisher's Summary
Julie Walters has been described as the nation's most popular actress and comedienne. She has been delighting us on screen and on stage for over 25 years and - thanks to her undoubted talent, infectious spirit and self-deprecating humour - we have taken her to our hearts.
Now she tells us her own story, in her own words. She was born in 50s Birmingham, daughter of an austere Irish Catholic mother. She was sent to school in a convent and from a young age always wanted to be an actress - but to appease her mother she first went into nursing. This didn't last for long, though, and she soon went to join The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. West End success with Educating Rita followed, and she quickly replicated her success on film, playing opposite Michael Caine. Julie's collaborations with her close friend Victoria Wood have given us, among others, the unforgettable character 'Mrs Overall' in Acorn Antiques.
Julie has also starred in a range of films including Billy Elliot, Calendar Girls and Mamma Mia!, and she has recently charmed a new generation of fans playing "Mrs. Weasley" in the Harry Potter films.
This, her long-awaited autobiography, candidly reveals all the highs and lows in an extraordinary life. It is a remarkable piece of writing: funny, painfully felt, moving, warm, fiercely intelligent and - above all - wholly entertaining.

I feel this could have been a much longer book. I am fascinated in people's lives and the courses that bring them to where they are in life. Julie is such a wonderful storyteller. Her accents are impeccable. This kept my interest and was saddened when the end came. I had the feeling of, "wait! I want more!" She is a treasure. I hope she continues to narrate books as she has such a skill for inflection, tone and creativeness.

Entertaining but What About Harry Potter?!
While I really enjoyed both the narrator and her story, as a big Harry Potter fan I was expecting to hear more about her experiences making the films for some odd 10 years and she barely mentioned it! She is hilarious though - laugh out loud funny and has led a pretty interesting life. Ended abruptly though - felt like something more needed to be said. Her accent was also difficult to understand at times. It was a good listen but left me wanting more....

Marvelous, loved every minute off it
I'm afraid I'm a bit off a late bloomer when it come to Julie Walters...I'm 53 and love British shows. I happened on to the dinnerladies and was so excited to find this show. As I do with all my British shows, I instantly get the names off the characters that are brilliant and see whether they are now. Sadness to find that Victoria Wood had passed at such a young age. Then Julie Walters, wonderful she's alive and she's still brilliant. OMG she was Mrs Weesley, got to watch all the Harry Potter's again... now her book on audible, with her reading it.... just a brilliant look into a massively wonderful actress. Thank you Julie Walters

That's another story by Julie Walters
This book is simply wonderful, it is well narrated. One of the things that puts this autobiography in a different league is that she is able to make this story not just funny but touching, I found myself laughing and crying at the same time.
She also shines with her ability animate those around her. Thus the Irish alcoholic father of one of her childhood friends has lips that are described as follows: 'They flopped around clumsily, an impediment to the words that came pouring through them in unintelligible strings.'
My only critism is that it ends in 1988, hopefully Vol:II follows shortly.

Love Julie, just didn't love the book.
I like reading (or in this case listening) to autobiographies of comedians/comediennes have read/listened to many in the past.
This was an interesting story regarding her upbringing and the formation of some of the characters she made, working with Victoria Wood. Being in Educating Rita and covering other aspects of her life. It was read by her and she has an engaging and warm voice that made it an easy listen.
I felt though, in the main, it didn't go into enough detail on the relationship between her and Victoria Wood and also seemed to end suddenly when there seemed to be much more of the story to continue with.
An ok book, that would probably interest a fan of hers but otherwise probably give it a miss.
