Publisher's Summary

Number one New York Times best-selling author Johanna Lindsey blends passion and humor in a dazzling, Regency-era novel in which a disastrous debutante becomes the toast of the town with a little help from a friend of the Prince Regent's.

Threatened by powerful enemies, William Blackburn, Earl of Ketterham, lives in exile in the Scottish Highlands with his daughter Vanessa. When she comes of age, William urges her to return to her mother in England to make her debut. Raised with all the advantages and freedom a boy would have, Vanessa doubts she can fit into the mold of a proper young lady. Still, she agrees to re-enter fashionable society, determined to end the vendetta against her father, never imagining the high price she will have to pay.

Lord Montgomery Townsend enjoys living on the edge, courting danger as he fixes potentially scandalous problems for the Prince Regent. While hiding out at the home of the Countess of Ketterham, Monty watches a disaster-in-the-making as his hostess tries to prepare her estranged daughter for a match with the pompous son of a powerful family. Puzzled as to why independent-minded Vanessa submits to being turned into a puppet and wants to marry the arrogant rogue, Monty nonetheless steps in to make her dreams come true. But no good deed goes unpunished and soon he faces more pressing problems, including the temptation to upend Vanessa's wedding plans so he can marry her himself!

It was good!

I saw a lot of other JL fans didn't like this book. I did. It's a very sweet love story.

Love Johanna Lindsey

I have been reading or listening to her books for years. It all started for me with the Mallory family. As a matter of fact, I may revisit that family.

Struggled to chapter 45...no more

Johanna Lindsey has a reputation as a good author. I've read a few good books of hers. This is NOT one of them. Lindsey may have been trying to garner interest in the book by creating annoying characters and drama. That may have worked if there wasn't so much stupidity...yes, stupidity. Very early on in the book, simple solutions to "the problem" were clear as glass. So the rest of the book was just silly drama. Not my kind of story. I hung on hoping it would get better...it did not. It just got more annoying. So glad the book was free for me.

Bad narration

I normally love Johanna Lindsey's books, but the narration was so
bad with this one, I barely got thru it. I'm going to read the boom in hardcover and hopefully, that will make the story come alive. I truly hope JL never uses this narrator again!

Good enough to pass time...

If you have a love for the period romances, this one is just okay. I was waiting for the excitement of the scandal but there wasn’t any, just a misunderstanding that I can’t see realistically making what happened taking place. The love story, on the other hand, is what made me continue to listen, Monty’s and Nessa’s love for each other was cute and sweet.

Loved it

I enjoyed this book a lot, the Narrator Priscilla Carson did a wonderful job. The characters were passionate, caring and real. I haven’t read a contemporary romance in quite a while, I’m going to read more. I enjoyed all the relationships between characters, they were all believable and sincere. The story itself was very intriguing. I was very entranced from the start and never lost interest. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen between a few characters. It certainly gives an addictive story with a happily ever after.

Good. Could’ve been better

I’ve read every Lindsey book she has written. This one was good but she’s done much better. Even her “ok” books are better then most. So definitely worth a credit.

Monotonous

First of all, I need to remember that Johanna Lindsey writes explicitly about sexual encounters. Sometimes the story doesn’t even call for it, but she plunks it in there anyway. I believe this story would be better if the “less is more” theory had been practiced. Also, the reader sounded like Humphrey Bogart every time she said “Sweetheart” in her English accent. It sort of came out like “Shweethot” it was distracting. The storyline was ludicrous. All the blackmail over nothing except stupid characters acting stupidly, with everyone paying dearly for someone else’s stupidity. Seriously, so far from plausible that it was a total flop. I will not read another Johanna Lindsey book.

Great story and brilliantly read

Great story and brilliantly read. Really enjoyable and would be interested in reading further books as a series with the storyline continued.
