Il Tartuffo è una delle tappe fondamentali dell’ascesa di Molière alla corte del Re Sole. Non ci sono dubbi sull’importanza di questa commedia nel percorso artistico di Jean-Baptiste Poquelin: con questo lavoro, si comincia a parlare molto di lui alla corte e non solo. C’erano stati già altri successi, naturalmente, ma quest’opera drammaturgica divertente colpiva i falsi devoti, per cui intorno all’autore si scatenò una rissa letteraria che lo pose al centro dell’attenzione di tutto il teatro francese del Seicento. E così sul Tartuffe (1664) cala il divieto di rappresentazione, il testo verrà poi modificato (subendo però la stessa sorte, nel 1667), e la querelle terminerà con la vittoria di Molière solo nel 1669.
