Publisher's Summary

When a British Special Forces soldier goes rogue, carrying out an attack at a US Army base in Syria leading to the death of two men, ex-MI5 controller Charlotte Button is hired to work out what his plan is and to take him down before he can carry it out.

When the man returns to the UK, it looks like the threat will be a lot closer to home. Charlotte puts her best man on the case - hitman Lex Harper. It's up to Lex to assemble a crack team and get to the soldier before he carries out what could be a massive terrorist attack. But Charlotte might require Lex's help with a more personal problem, too. As ex-MI5, Charlotte knows a lot of information about a lot of important people. And now someone has gone to extreme lengths to get to that information by breaking into her safe deposit box in a Hatton Garden-style armed robbery.

While it's down to Lex to prevent a potential terrorist attack on British soil, Charlotte must work out who is after her and what they want.

Emerging From Shepherd's Flock

This is an interesting move from Stephen Leather. Moving on from Dan Shepherd he has promoted from within and Lex Harper emerges as a fully formed lead. Although the centre of attention may have shifted Leather certainly appreciates what sells to his readers and he has delivered in style with this one.

A plot that must be a considerable worry for modern-day governments. The levels of professionalism and expertise in today's modern special forces is phenomenal. Given how so many veterans feel concerned about what they are fighting for and let down by their countries after they end their service the idea of someone going rogue feels very credible.

As a lead Harper has much less baggage than Shepherd and certainly his own moral compass which it's fair to say is not pointing consistently in the same direction as international law might prescribe. The story itself moves along at a decent pace and also brings in a few other old faces all brought to life very well by Paul Thornley who seems to be a very natural fit for these books.

In all a very highly satisfying read.

I'm a fan -love them all

another good Leather and Thornley duo, Paul reads the character's just as I expect them to sound, love his style. I think Leathers work should be relived in movie or at least great TV dramas. Great to see the old players work well without Shepherd, please keep going Stephen 😉

Terrific Entertainment

I'm not going to launch into an enthusiastic speech of how I first read Stephen Leather due to the reviews - how I felt this was yet another gritty British author with yet more stereotypes as main characters - and was quickly won over by his pacing, humour, attention to detail, overlapping plotlines and realism. But suffice to say Leather and Thornley are my idea of a perfect match and every book is as entertaining as the last. Takedown is great fun. It had me laughing out loud - gasping out loud - and wondering out loud what the denouement could be. Stephen Leather is a genius at this genre and the reader always feels in safe hands. Top author and I have read hundreds. But don't believe me. if you've never encountered Leather or Thornley before then grab Hard Landing - become another acolyte - and thank me later. No. Changed my mind. You can thank me now.

As good as it gets from Mr Leather

The story is good that’s a given. The narrator is excellent could listen to Paul Thornley all day. I find the characters totally authentic. Why listen to one book when you can download them all

background noise

coughing audible in background regularly, not loud enough to obscure the voice performance but distracting especially when using headphones.

Brilliant

Absolutely brilliant. Why isn't this on the big screen ? What a film it would be. I would recommend listening to this one after Charlotte has left the secret service in the Dan Shepherd series. In my job I drive a lot. I didn't want to get out of the car. Got engrossed in this story. Like all Stephen Leather books this one has you drawn in from the start. Paul Thornley is on top form too. Brilliant.

Lex Harper the man of many accents!

I’ve no superlatives left for Stephen Leather and Paul Thornley as a writer/narrator duo, none! Just one thing; So far Lex Harper has been mainly Scottish then he was Home Counties English and now in this book he’s either posh scouse or somewhere close to Merseyside. Why the continual change with Lex’s accent?

Brilliant in every aspect...

Paul Thornley, as ever, made this story come alive with an excellent job of narration. The story was full of action, and all what you would expect from a Stephen Leather book and I commend him for not letting us down. Thank you for once again keeping thoroughly entertained and out of trouble!!
