Davids tilværelse var bogstaveligt talt nedadgående og kulminerede i, at han i en brandert faldt ud af et vindue fra tredje sal. Det koster ham det ene ben, og for at komme til hægterne bliver han inviteret til at bo hos sin gamle kammerat Steen, som er præst i en på overfladen idyllisk jysk landsby. David får stille og roligt mere mod på livet igen, men pludselig stopper idyllen, da to personer, en af dem Steens hustru, dør under altergangen en søndag formiddag. Det viser sig, at der er gift i altervinen, men hvem står bag? Og hvorfor? David får øjnene op for landsbysamfundets intriger og bliver selv udsat for byens sladder. Sammenhængene går dog stille og roligt op for ham i takt med at uhyggen breder sig.
