Publisher's Summary

My dog once took a bullet that was intended for me. A bullet that ripped through his chest, narrowly missing his heart, and exited through his shoulder blade. This left him unconscious on the floor of my home. Amazingly, this bullet did not kill him.

Ten years ago, I adopted Blue after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you never to buy a dog on impulse. Going to the pound because you need something in your life that's worth holding onto is rarely, if ever, mentioned. I asked the man at the pound to show me the biggest dogs they had. He showed me some Rottweiler-German Shepherd puppies that he said would grow to be quite large. Then he showed me a six-month-old Shepherd that would get pretty big. Then he showed me Blue, the largest dog they had. He was as tall as a Great Dane, with the snout of a Collie, the markings of a Siberian husky, the ears and tail of a shepherd and the body of a wolf, with one blue eye and one brown.

Crouched in a sitting position, unable to lie down, unable to sit all the way up, he looked at me from between the bars, and I fell in love. "I'll tell you, lady, he's pretty but he's skittish. He sheds, and I mean sheds. I don't think you want this dog," the man told me. But, I knew I had to have him. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I brought Blue home, and we lived together for years. He was, for most of our relationship, my only companion. But, when I first met Blue, a lifetime ago now, I had family and friends. I worked at a crappy coffeehouse. I was young and lost; I was normal.

Back then, at the beginning of this story, before I'd ever seen a corpse, before Blue saved my life, before I felt what it was like to kill someone in cold blood, I was still Joy Humbolt. I'd never even heard the name Sydney Rye.

P.S. The dog doesn't die.

Not for me

The narrator switched accents well and spoke clearly, but I just couldn't feel any connection to any of the characters, especially the men (who all came across as hesitant, weak or unintelligent, despite being in professions that indicated they should be profficient). I couldn't work out if that was the narrator or the authors fault. in fairness, these books are written with a first person perspective which means we see the other characters from the protagonists (Joy-Sydney) viewpoint. The books started out with an angry young women, who had apparently had at least one bad relationship experience, so I naively thought alter-ego Sydney would emerge as a strong feminist. Nope. Joy transitions from coffee barista to dog walker to private decective without any real effort and this quite frankly lacks credibility. She is far too easily influenced by handsome and rich men, and social media fans who appear to wait for her to 'save the day' which of course, she does! Sadly all her relationships felt shallow and contrived (especially in the 3rd book). I am still not sure why the dog (Blue) is even promoted as a main character. The dog does very little and doesn't even behave like a real dog. Throughout the storylines he does get shot at, but most often he just watches the action passively. We learn of the human characters having showers or using the bathroom facilities, but seldom is this dog taken outside for a walk or a pee. Somehow because of Sydney's new found (stolen) wealth, this dog gets to travel all over the world, but to be honest, Sydney comes across as quite a neglectful dog owner. It would have strengthened the plot if he'd been trained to protect her or if he'd emerged as a dog who could sniff out the 'bad guys'. I listened to the first 3 books because I really wanted to give the characters a chance. I won't be following up with the rest of the series.

Same as so many other trashy books.

totally spoiled by unecessary swearing and sexually explicit visuals. I tried to scroll to the end to write this as I only listen to a little of it, but could not Pity, the story might have been interesting and I have wasted my money on the audiotrack. I really would not even give it a 1 since I didnt even get to the story. I dont understand why talented writers need to resort to such low grade writing strategies.
