Brilliant as always

Like catching up with old friends, tales of Uhtred and Finan are a pleasure to red or listen to.
Captivating, well written and thoroughly enjoyable. Always struggle to put down one of Bernard Cornwells books, or to cease listening to it.

Good edition to the story of Uhtred

I have read all the other Saxon Tales or Last Kingdom books and the story taken in its entirety is excellent. It is disappointing in this book that Uhtred would even consider running from a fight. Too much of the book ponders on his indecision. This is still the authors decision as Uhtred ages that this is part of his story and worth reading. This book is well written and the performance is excellent. Maybe I just don’t like that Uhtred is aging. I expected him to be arrogant and defiant till the end.

Bernard Cornwell Does Not Disappoint

Bernard Cornwell has done it again. Sword of Kings entertains as a new favorite of Cornwell’s Saxon Stories (Last Kingdom) series. Uhtred is an all time favorite literary character of mine and I simply don’t want the adventures to end for this endearingly flawed, oath bound, hero. As always, I had trouble pressing the stop button. The narrator Matt Bates once again provides an excellent performance bringing the characters to life.
Having read many of Cornwell’s series including, Sharpe’s series and others, he has created yet another masterful entertaining work. Well done!

Needs more Keeble

Great read, but this whole series would've been better if Johnathan Keeble were the narrator.

Another exciting adventure

I love this series. I wish the books were a little longer because I finish them quickly. Very well written and never dull. I’ll be waiting for the next installment.

Enjoyable

I’ve been waiting for this book and was pleased with it all together. This series is much better than its Netflix version and this book fits well in the series. It did seem the end was a bit rushed and that Cornwell was either ready to complete it or in a deadline. If you like this series you’ll be pleased with this book.

And again - excellent

The story of Utred continues and like the other 11 books is excellent. It took a bit to get accustomed to the narrator but he did a great job and all the pronunciations were consistent with previous books. I am excited for the next book.

Bernard Cornwell : Simply The Best

There is only one problem with Bernard Cornwell books, they leave you wanting much, much more! The exquisite detail and character development is beyond reproach, I am heartened by his words in the Afterword, that our hero UTHRED will be there for the time when England is United!

Excellent

Excellent 12th chapter of Uhtred's saga. Cornwall keeps the same high standard as the previous books in the saxon stories. Can't wait for the next installment.

Love the series but this was a little flat

I'm glad Bernard is still writing the Saxon stories but this book felt like filler.

Less then the usual from Cornwell

I have been a longtime fan of the saga of Uthred, but once in a while the stories does not catch proper. This was sadly one of those times, and although i enjoyed the first third of the book, the rest felt as if Cornwell was simply “cleaning up”, readying his characters and the narrative for the next book. A lack of pace, and somewhat a repetition from many other books in the series.

That being said - I wholeheartedly recommend the series, and i would never say one should be skipped, as it all adds up.

As good as ever

Another great book in the Last Kingdom series. Only after listening to it, had I realized how I had missed listening to the adventures of Uhtred! Hard to stop listening. All the best qualities of the series are present in this latest book.
Highly recommended.

Every book gripped me until this one

I have to listen to this audiobook again, I hope I have missed something. I found the whole thing a little ponderous and predictable, I hate saying this because Bernard Cornwell is one of the best authors in this genre (in my opinion) and this series is a personal favourite.
As ever the narration by Matt Bates is outstanding!

Loved it as always

Utred is aging and finding warrior lifestyle difficult. I like that most of it is set in London. Battle descriptions are bone crackingly real. Good characters, well portrayed. Narration was spot on.
