Publisher's Summary

In the final reckoning, choose your side carefully....

The epic conclusion to the globally best-selling historical series, coming October 2020.

After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria. With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure – yet Uhtred is far from safe. Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages. To the south, King Æthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia – and now eyes a bigger prize.

To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion. Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred. Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced.

Only fate can decide the outcome. The epic story of how England was made concludes in War Lord, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series.

One of the best

Loved this book and possibly one of the best in the series. I’m a bit gutted because I’ve enjoyed reading these over the years and it’s sad that this was the last book. Thank you Bernard Cornwell for Uthred of Bebbenburg.

Loved the series

History with a great fiction interwoven within. A warts and all hero in a bloody and harsh history. Google and Google Maps got a workout while listening to the excellent narration, following the geography of the British Isles where battles were fought and researching the historical figures and names. A marvellous adventure and journey through the bloody turbulence of the making of England.

The wait was worth it

I counted days till this book was released. Matt Bates is a brilliant narrator. I wish it wasn't the last but all good things must come to an end. Big salute to Bernard Cornwell.

One of the best in the series

My favorite books in this series have been: Death of Kings (despite terrible narration), The Pagan Lord, and The Empty Throne and now I can easily add War Lord to my list of favorites in the series. I found War Lord to be one of the best in the series, so that makes for a wonderful conclusion to the story of Uhtred. I love the title even more after finishing the book. It was not difficult to say goodbye to all the characters that I have come to love through the years and I don't have that dreaded sadness that comes to a series finale- I think because this book was such a satisfying conclusion to an epic story that I just want to start from the beginning and do it all again. This book does have our usual oaths (questionable and steadfast), new characters and ones from the past, deception of people and plots, intrigue, and a hefty dose of all emotions. This book truly has it all. The call backs to earlier characters and battles was just enough to make you realize that this is the end and of course these things would be going through Uhtred's mind especially at this stage in his life. I was not disappointed in the end or the epilogue - wonderful how the author made this come full circle. I often wondered how or if the author would tie back to the very beginning of the series and I was not disappointed. I have to add that all the secondary characters that come to life throughout this series (and this book) plus all the laughter and tears I've shed during these 13 books makes this series my favorite and Uhtred my favorite character. Do not miss out on this series - highly entertaining and very enjoyable.

Incredible conclusion

Ties together 12 other books in a very satisfying way. Makes all 12 books better.

A Nice Bow...

This final installment of “The Last Kingdom” did a good job of tying up most of the story threads from prior books and out a nice bow on top. While certainly not one of the most compelling entry in the series, a mediocre Cornwell effort is still better than most. The only narration complaint I have is with the pronunciation of “seax”. The word is pronounced “sax” in English or very much like “sex” in French. If I had heard “SAY AX” one...more...time...

please someone tell me it isn't over!?

I'm extremely sad and somehow satisfied to have listened to the end of this serie... but honestly I would take a bunch of mediocre books of the son of Uhtred, who is also Uhtred than see an end to this series

An excellent ending to an amazing series

This book is an excellent final chapter in the Uhtred saga which spans more than 30 years of English history. Very pleased that Matt Bates narrated the final five or six books. The constant changing of narrators made listening less enjoyable. Uhtred is a memorable character and a few of the last books got a bit tiresome this book really brings the entire story back to life and to a satisfying conclusion.

a fitting and appropriate end to the series

this series has been one of my all time favs and even though there have been several different narrators, the greatness of Cornwell's writing shines through. farewell Uhtred, it's been a pleasure.

Uhtred!

I will miss Uhtred of Bebbanburg, Finan and the rest of their comrades. What a saga, and this was a fitting end to that saga. A roaring and exciting climax.

Fantastic story interweaved with history.

Love Bernard Cornwell's books. They bring history to life. This the 13th and last in the Saxon series is up to his usual standard. I will never fight in a shield wall but the description he writes brings it to light. I have been to many of the places in this series and whether you are standing on Bamburgh castle, Durham or walking up to the white horse I always view it in the eyes of Uthred! Can't believe that's 13 books and 16 years. I feel Uthreds aches and pains now. Thank you Bernard Cornwell

Fabulous book - fabulous series.

I have loved these books - and am sorry they’ve come to an end. I think what I have loved the most, is the fact that, although it is fictional, it is based on a knowledge of the times and has been researched so well. Thank you so much Mr. Cornwell, for bringing times past to life.

Great Finale

I consider this series to Cornwell's best. Thankfully there's not really a full tying up of the series. Regretfully Uthred's castle did not last the 1000 years as it was rebuilt in the 19th century by an industrialist.
