About this listen

No discussion of great modern authors is complete without mention of Cormac McCarthy, whose rare and blazing talent makes his every work a true literary event. A grand addition to the American literary canon, Suttree introduces readers to Cornelius Suttree, a man who abandons his affluent family to live among a dissolute array of vagabonds along the Tennessee river.©1979 Cormac McCarthy (P)2012 Recorded Books Fiction Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Classics

Critic Reviews

Suttree contains a humor that is Faulknerian … and a freakish imaginative flair reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor.” ( Times Literary Supplement, London)

This is sublime. Poe's reading is perfection. It is so damn moving. Harrowing and Beautiful. Heavy as anything you'd care to name. Brother, this may just rearrange you.

This is a challenging masterpiece written by one of the best writers of recent times. it explores the low and desperate sections of society set during the 1950s in America’s south. It’s an epic that is challenging, grotesque uplifting, funny, and totally compelling..

Down and out in Knoxville.

This is one of McCarthy's three early masterworks which really comes to life with Poe's narration.

Although descriptive passages roll off his tongue, its the dialogue which is so entertaining - with such a large number of minor comic characters, McCarthy is right up there with Dickens.

Essential reading!

Masterpiece skillfully narrated

Incredibly weird and hilarious. Every page is strange poetry, filled with wonderful Tennesseean language. His best work along with Blood Meridian. Richard Poe is perfect for this.

The words! Who ever could find use for such words.

bleak and wonderful

I'm a fan of many of Cormac McCarthy novels but found Suttree difficult to engage with and I didn't find myself investing in the characters.

disappointed
