About this listen

No job, no money, no love - and to make things worse, 27-year-old Charlie has no choice but to leave New York City and move in with his mom in his isolated and conservative hometown of Sunset Springs.

Home isn’t a comfortable place for Charlie. One of very few Black residents and the only trans person around town that he knows of, this will be Charlie’s first time back in Sunset Springs since he transitioned. He expects confusion and maybe even hostility. He definitely does not expect Jackson Ford.

Jack was the brooding yet beloved football star at their high school, but now, he’s an outsider after coming out as gay. When Charlie and Jackson fall for each other in a swift and surprising romance, Charlie has to decide if he’s willing to exchange his old dreams for a new one.

Sunset Springs is an audio novella about finding courage to allow unexpected change, even at the risk of a broken heart.

This was a nice short story that managed to do a lot. I enjoyed the insight into the trans experience, as well as the insight into what it means to be black and gay in a small town. The love story was sweet and the characters were easy to like.

we can't help being who we are, but bigots should open their eyes, hearts to persons who are suffering being different. God made us all so it can't be wrong,

Charlie is a young black transman who left his small insular hometown of Sunset Springs for a publishing career in NYC but the dream came to an abrupt halt when he lost his job in a redundancy round and failed to find a new one. He reluctantly returns home to help his sick mother by running her ailing bookshop and he’s worried about the reception he’ll receive from the town. He does get some pushback but he’s pleasantly surprised to reconnect with Jack, one of the popular high school jocks who has since come out as gay. As his relationship with Jack progresses, Charlie must decide whether to stay in this somewhat intolerant town or try to rekindle his publishing career.

At just under three hours, this ‘own voices’ short story establishes the main characters well and mostly explores Charlie and Jack’s experiences of small-town prejudice and acceptance and how they’ve come to terms with it. Neither man has had a fulfilling relationship in the past and Charlie, in particular, has been hurt by the casual cruelty of dating in an unaccepting racist and transphobic community, even in NYC. This is a positive story with a hopeful future and the author has avoided tying up everything in a neat unrealistic bow. 🎧 Black trans artist Qamar Yochanan was the perfect choice to narrate this story, he does a great job!

Romance blossoms despite small-town prejudice!
