Sally Diamond cannot understand why what she did was so strange. She was only doing what her father told her to do, to put him out with the rubbish when he died.

Now Sally is the centre of attention, not only from the hungry media and police detectives, but also a sinister voice from a past she cannot remember. As she begins to discover the horrors of her childhood, Sally steps into the world for the first time, making new friends and big decisions, and learning that people don't always mean what they say.

But who is the man observing Sally from the other side of the world? And why does her neighbour seem to be obsessed with her? Sally's trust issues are about to be severely challenged . . .

If Liz Nugent was a clockmaker she'd be Galileo . . . She is as excellent a writer as anyone living I can think of (Sebastian Barry)

Liz Nugent dares to go where many won't. What a compelling storyteller she is. Always challenging. I laughed out loud only to recoil from my laughter as the story unfolded. For this is wickedly dark territory.
And yet amidst the darkness, she allows a light to glimmer - that of a diamond'

A great read. story and characters kept me wondering what was going to happen next.
The ending seemed very quick, but still a fantastic read.

Best read I've had for a long time

A well researched, authentic, page turner. One of the best to come out of Ireland lately (and that is saying something as most Irish literary works are excellent).

Excellent

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent.
My friend, Ashley, basically forced me to read this book. She would not shut up about it until I promised I would read it (that’s how I remember it, anyway). I finished the book two weeks ago, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Everyone here knows I love a quirky character, and Sally Diamond fits perfectly into that niche. But Sally isn’t strange for fun, and this book makes that perfectly clear as the damage and trauma of her childhood are unravelled.
The book is divided into two timelines, perspectives, and countries (Ireland and New Zealand). It is full of violence and trauma; however, the majority of it is alluded to. There are a few horrible scenes, but they are necessary to fully understand the characters’ motivations and how they have been victims of being emotionally manipulated.
I give it a big thumbs up. 👍 (Ashley was right, but don't tell her I said so).

I loved it.
