Publisher's Summary

In 1973, Moll Gladney goes missing from the Tipperary hillside where she was born. Slowly, her parents - Paddy and Kit - begin to accept that she’s gone forever. But she returns, changed, and with a few surprises for her family and neighbours.

Nothing is ever the same again for the Gladneys, who learn that fate cares little for duty, that life rarely conforms to expectation, that God can’t be relied upon to heed any prayer.

A story of exile and return, of loss and discovery, of retreat from grief and the saving power of love.

Strange Flowers

A beautiful book written with such emotion and love of the land and nature . Lots of twists and turns, beautifully crafted and intertwined story of love and forbidden love and squinting windows of rural Ireland , and yet a feel of community, of watching out for each other, enduring love. The words, images dance on the pages, completely immersing one in this beautiful land of a small village in Tipperary

Wonderful

A total treat of a novel, brilliantly read. One of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to! Lyrical but real, entirely believable and perfectly written. Treat yourself- it’s a joy.

Narrator was very good

Narration was good but the story was not to my taste and I found it dull. I would buy more books read by the same narrator.

An unexpected absolutely delightful book

The only reason my title includes the word ‘unexpected’ is simply because this is my first read from Donal Ryan. I cannot explain how much I enjoyed this book., My mother was born and bred in Tipperary and ventured to London in her late teens. So there was much I could relate to. But ... that aside Donal captures Alexander’s family in London so well. This book made me laugh and cry throughout. And I fell in love with both Paddy and Alexander. Such a powerful story covering race, religion, loss, love and life. Also, I can be quite fussy about the narrator. He/she can make or break a book for me. But Donna Nikolaosen was perfect for the story. Can’t wait to discover more from Mr Ryan,

So good I wished I had written it.

I thought this was a beautiful book . The descriptions the characters and the innate optimism of the writing made listening an uplifting and pleasurable experience. The reader’s voice and inflection enhance Donal Ryan’s excellent writing. I was almost jealous of Donal Ryan ‘s talent and skill in his portrayal of the characters. Highly and genuinely recommended.
