About this listen

THE BRAND NEW NOVEL IN THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLING RIVERS OF LONDON SERIES

'This isn't London. The rules are different up here, and so are the allegiances.'

Detective Sergeant Peter Grant takes a much-needed holiday up in Scotland. And he'll need one when this is over...

If more's the merrier, then it's ecstatic as his partner Beverley, their young twins, his mum, dad, his dad's band and their dodgy manager all tag along. Even his boss, DCI Thomas Nightingale, takes in the coastal airs as he trains Peter's cousin Abigail in the arcane arts.

And they'll need them too, because Scotland's Granite City has more than its fair share of history and mystery, myth ... and murder.

When a body is found in a bus stop, fresh from the sea, the case smells fishy from the off.

Something may be stirring beyond the bay - but there's something far stranger in the sky...

Kobna Holbrook-Smith and Shvorne Marks did a remarkable job of bringing to life Ben Aaronovitch’s latest Rivers of London tale. The earnestness passion and world weariness they bring to the narrative is very satisfy. Mr Aaronovitch’s ability to fit supernatural skulduggery and shenanigans into the everyday day operational policing framework makes what could have been fantasy make believe, seem much more grounded and real. There is quite a profound suspension of disbelief.

Excellent narration spot on procedurals

Another great story in the Rivers Of London series. Kobna’s narration is great as always. Now, narration is very personal to each listener but for me I couldn’t get on with Abigail’s narrator. Especially given Kobna’s portrayal of Abigail in previous novels. My hope is that they don’t continue on with dual narrators moving forward as it spoils it for me. Still, a fantastic story and wonderful series.

Fun story. Dual narrators are not for me.

Once again Kobna Holbrook-Smith imbues every character with a unique voice. Excellent narration from both narrators and another gripping story in the Rivers of London series Ben Aaronovich packs in so much detail I don’t know how he manages to make it all work so well.

Brilliant narrators

I have loved this series but unfortunately I felt the story fell flat and was quite boring. However Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s narration was amazing as ever and probably the only reason I was able to listen to the end.

Sadly Disappointing

Another excellent addition to the Rivers of London series. Great use of well loved characters and new additions to the world of Peter Grant and co. Really enjoyed the story telling from both Peter and Abigail’s perspectives. Wonderful narration, as usual!

Wonderful Scottish adventure

I adore all of this series, the characters, love the voice in the audio book, love the covers, can’t wait for the next 🙌🏼

I, like so many others, have been waiting for this with such anticipation! And I am disappointed. The plot idea is fine, but I am ambivalent towards the Abigail character -although her foxes are awesome - and this story did not make her any more sympathetic for me. I read - and listen to - this series for Peter. The humour, the chaos and impulsivity of his character, while rightly not present in the ‘terrifying’ Abigail character, is why I love the series so much and it was mostly missing… and I’m not that interested in YA romance. I think it was supposed to be 50/50 Peter and Abigail but the Peter bits flew and the Abigail sections … didn’t.
I found the 2 years between stories a bit of a hop - the graphic novel doesn’t really affect that - and I feel there was a couple of issues with continuity. The other characters who were around felt a bit pointless and didn’t really contribute to the story.
I’ll be honest, this was the first one I found a bit of a slog. Kobna (as always, you are a legend) and Shvorne did a wonderful job, they are both excellent narrators but I probably wouldn’t have finished it if it wasn’t for their excellent work. I’m very sad. Perhaps it will be better on second listening.

I’m sorry, I don’t love it.

I wanted The Nightingale and Starling, but I got Abigails young adult romance. I simply have no resonance with this subject matter. I love the series but not this particular book.

Kudos for the shameless way of getting all your characters to Scotland though. As i said, absolutely shameless transposition.

Not written for me

I don't get it. The dual plot lines and readers aren't an issue but the Abigail story and how it's written doesn't match with the Rivers of London "style". Teen romance literature is not on my radar and it feels a bit forced and jarring. The magic/fantasy part of the story didn't really deliver for me either, was very shallow and light. I love the author and the narrators past work and they all can't be hits so this is just my opinion and I am sure others will love it. I felt like the Rivers storyline is being moved to teen romance/angst audience or something?

Bit jarring
