Gritty. Grisly. Gruesome. Real. Heart-wrenching.
Stellar performances from an all star cast. Glad it was audio. Not sure I would have been able to handle video of some of the subject matter dealt with in this series. DCI Stone is wonderful character. I enjoyed making the journey with him, even when I wanted to tap him on the head for being an ass at times. I highly recommend this series to any fan of police procedurals with powerful story lines and lots of heart!

Surprised more people in US haven’t heard these !
I took a chance on this and loved it! It’s 4 stories radio dramas and it’s honestly the best series I’ve ever heard ! Stone is a realistic detective you quickly start to love ! There are sound effects , music etc it’s very much like listening to a play ! I listen while walking my dogs and this was much more fun than a normal book ! I got chills at Times bc of the suspense etc ! Very dramatically acted out ! You get 4 short stores w same detective ! I esp liked the one w the Down syndrome actor ! I’ll buy everything this man produces! It’s that good !

Fantastic
Everything about this was fabulous! The storylines the characters the actors playing characters were all spot on and so well done! After this 1-4 series I feel I know John Stone and what he is like what his life is like. He isn't a super cop a no fault man. He is a man who loves his job maybe too much..he can't leave work at work. Having been married to a cop I know what this is like. Going right on to the next set of this great radio series. It's so colorful it's so multidimensional I can SEE the action see the players as if I was watching this on a screen live action.

Will definitely listen to again.
The production values that have gone into this series must have been high. Why Hugo Speer isn't a bigger star is beyond me as his performance here encapsulates so many facets of a person who is moral yet amoral; flawed yet deeply caring; an upholder of the law who wishes to see a truer sense of justice where he feels the system fails, yet is unable to do so. This audio title represents real value for money - and really should transfer to TV. All of the actors, major and minor, involved give a fantastic audio rendition. This is one of those rare audios where you can really believe everything that you are hearing. The sound mix is good too for headphone wearers.

Unremarkable police procedural.
I really struggled with this one and eventually gave up after 10 of the 17 episodes. It’s full of stereotypes (both within the police and the public characters) and some of the stories are clumsily constructed. Much of the dialogues comes from the do-it-yourself book of crime writing, eg: “shouldn’t you be out there catching who did this and not questioning me. I’m not the criminal here!” This particular quote is paraphrased in more than one episode. Everybody the police talk to is angry and confrontational (which gets really boring when it happens multiple times in each episode), and Stone himself seem to be incapable of making a sensible, rational decision in either his professional or personal life. Quite how he became a police inspector beggars belief. He would have been rooted out and sent on his way at the first stage of the recruitment process! My two main gripes were an episode that presented us with a fake child abduction (Shannon Matthews immediately sprung to mind), and an episode where an officer was allowed to investigate a sexual assault on his own wife! Yeah, like that would really happen! There’s also an effort to present Stone as some sort of vigilante who is prepared to dispense his own idea of justice - even if it compromises the outcome of a case. Very disappointing all round.

I didn’t like the characters, the story or the dramatisation I only kept going in the hope it would get better. Flawed detectives are all very well but there’s usually something that you can see as a redeeming factor but not here. I wish I hadn’t bought the second series
