About this listen

5,000 years in the future, humanity faces total extermination.

Our one defence: highly-trained soldiers who scour the metal-strewn blackness of space to hunt down a terrifying enemy: an insect life-form known only as 'Bugs.'

This is the story of trooper Johnny Rico, from his idealistic enlistment in the infantry of the future through his rigorous training to the command of his own platoon. And his destiny is a war that will span the galaxy.

So similar yet different to the movie. Enjoyed the deeper explanation for citizenship and what it really means to be Mobile Infantry.

Starship Troopers... narated by RC Bray,... it just doesn't get much better than this!

Many thanks

Incredible!

It’s a book about improving the human race through sacrifice while facing the threat of extinction.
Similar to the movie but more detailed and extra twists.
Technology is great, preinternet but quite close in some ways to what we have without the downsides.

Hardworking characters.

5/5.

always nice to be reminded you don't hate Hollywood enough. Thank god verhoven gave the script writing to someone competent.

movie was good too.

but as with all movies based on books, read the source first.

story introduced concepts now standard in SciFi e.g. power armour.
not enough variety between different characters voice so at times was hard to tell who was saying what.

i was surprised at how the story feels very pro- military. Specially given how the movie is quite the opposite! It's a fun enough listen but no where near at deep or thoughtful as Stranger in a Strange Land.

Not what i expected

By making the enemy faceless monsters, Heinlein tries to get us to appreciate the virtues and humanity of military discipline: not only for the purpose of exerting political force, but also as a source of public virtue in general. Maybe people felt that way after WW2? Today it seems senseless and brutish, but we live in a time where force will again become the most salient form of political power, ahead of trade and global organisations. A good story, but I hope the message is out of date.

Is militarism necessary?

So I’ve read this book a few times.
Every thing is better with R. C. though.

Bray is the man

I cannot believe this book was first published in 1959!! It feels as contemporary and better written than most of the things in its category today.
I'm so stoked I came across it!
I loved the movie but never knew it was based on a book.

Wow!!! This book should get me Love!

A pleasure to hear my favourite book narrated so perfectly. This should be taught in all schools across all nations. Then maybe we might each learn the importance of service and sacrifice.

My favourite book of all time
