Publisher's Summary

An enthralling story about love, motherhood and choosing who you belong to in the world by best-selling author Kimberley Freeman.

1874: only days before she is to leave the foundling home where she grew up, Agnes Resolute discovers that, as a baby, she had been abandoned with a small token of her mother: a unicorn button.

Agnes always believed her mother had been too poor to keep her, but after working as a laundress in the home she recognises the button as belonging to Genevieve Breckby, the beautiful and headstrong daughter of a local noble family. Agnes had seen Genevieve once, in the local village, and had never forgotten her.

Despite having no money, Agnes will risk everything in a quest that will take her from the bleak moors of Northern England to the harsh streets of London, then on to Paris and Ceylon. As Agnes follows her mother's trail, she makes choices that could cost her dearly. Finally, in Australia, she tracks Genevieve down. But is Genevieve capable of being the mother Agnes hopes she will be?

A little slow

I usually enjoy Kimberley Freeman's books, but not this one.
The storyline was a little slow and dull.
I particularly did not like the narrator's tone for the main character's - her voicing actually made me dislike the main female character as her Yorkshire accent was just too grating.
This was disappointing as I actually did not mind the narrators voice when she was speaking in her own accent.
I was hoping to enjoy the novel once it progressed a little but it only got worse.

Mills and Boon?

I kept falling asleep and didn't miss anything important. The author spent so much time stating the obvious and yet the characters were rather one dimensional. The plot had promise but was weakened by the alternating flashbacks.

I would not have bought this book if it wasn't for the sample Audible provided. This sample took place in the present and was easier to identify with, but the sample wasn't representative of the book.

A little slow, but quite epic

Some interesting aspects to this story, and I was somewhat thankful that I didn't see the twist coming!
Great narration, it was a little slow and in some parts quite verbose.

What an adventure!!

Engaging from the very start. Filled with adventure, love (lost and found) and discovering what and where home really lies. Hey laughed and cried throughout the story. One of the best I’ve listened to in a while!!

Stars Across the Ocean

If the ratings went up to a 10 this book would warrant it hands down!! It was perfectly written with just the right amount of mystery ,exceptional characters and three stories woven into one. Jennifer Vuletics narration was exceptional!!!!!! I will eagerly search for other books by then both!!!

I kept reading

The plot was unpredictable and predictable. The heroin made stupid decisions, had a hard start turn out just fine. Then she went to another adventure and did it again. BUT the new places and who showed up where were pretty surprising. The ending was happy. I like happy endings. Don't read this book if your looking for a literary accomplishment but if you want a light feel good story with love and adventure in an old fashion way read and enjoy. You won't remember it for long but that's ok.

A dramatic story

I did enjoy this book, but I found the trips backwards and forwards in time a little confusing at times It came to a very satisfactory conclusion though with all the threads tied up neatly.

Sappy and predictable

Could not finish, even while increasing the audio speed. Don’t know why it gets such a good rating.

Dang!

Would have liked this so much more if the time switches were clearer and sometimes I did even know what continent they were in. But a great story.

Enjoyable story but not her bestI

I enjoyed the story but I didnt really warm to Agnes although she certainly had a lot of adventures. I couldn't really see the point of the daughter who had come over from Australia to look after her ailing mother part of the story - I suppose it was to construct the story around the pieces of letters the mother had found but it didnt add anything to the main story and I found it irrelevant. I enjoyed Ember Island and Wildflower Hill much more but still will look out for more of Kimberley Freemans books on Audible.
