Publisher's Summary

The Republic is decaying, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was elected to save the galaxy from collapsing under the forces of discontent.

On the tiny but strategic planet of Ansion, a powerful faction is on the verge of joining the growing secessionist movement. At the Chancellor's request, the Jedi Council sends two Jedi Knights, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luminara Unduli, along with their Padawans Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee, to stabilize the planet's population. To succeed, the Jedi will have to fulfill near-impossible tasks, befriend wary strangers, and influence two great armies - stalked all the while by an enemy sworn to see the negotiations collapse and the mission fail.

Critic Reviews

"The best things are the new creations. The landscape and animal life of Ansion is wonderfully described. . . .[along with] some excellent fight scenes and a display of lightsaber gymnastics." (SFX magazine)
"Foster delves into the internal conflict of Anakin Skywalker and the psyche of the Jedi." (USA Today)
"Adams reads expertly and confidently, and his storytelling powers flow with Jedi force." (AudioFile)

I just wish this and so many others weren't abridged... At least have a full version available for those of us who enjoy them. Please?

Stop abridging these books!

The Star Wars books are amazing and full of small details that may make more sense in later stories. But when the books are abridged you miss many of the details. What is the point of abridging them?? And why do we pay the same price for a book that is 3 hours as apposed to a non abridged book that last twice as long? I'll admit I have listened to many abridged Star Wars books, only because I've listened to practicly all of the non abridged books. I've had to resort to listening to the abridged books now, and it makes me angry every time I pay so much for a partial book. Please stop ruining these stories!!

meh, abridged.

it was an interesting book but felt more like a filler story. I also cant help but wonder if the abridged left out some important details.

The Mission Before Episode II

This was a nice book. The story takes place immediately before Attack of the Clones, and has Obi-wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker attempting to prevent a system from seceding from the Republic alongside Luminara Unduli and Bariss Offee. The characters have some interesting moments, and the interactions feel genuine.

However, if you are hoping for a grand story, this isn't the book for you. The conflict is major, though its solution is minor, and the book pads out the short mission by having the Jedi travel through the wilderness. Not much happens throughout the novel, and the antagonists are quite forgettable. If not for the Jedi cast it could've been dropped. It's a shame nothing of value really happened, because putting a cast of Jedi in a mission right before the eruption of the Clone Wars could have been far more interesting and fun.

The narrator was good, but his performance wasn't as good as some other narrators. Not to say he was bad, because he wasn't. But someone like Marc Thompson or Jonathan Davis would have made it a little more enjoyable.

I wish it wasn’t abridged

I truly wish this wasn’t abridged. I really enjoyed the story but I like the in-depth Star Wars books. It gives us a better understanding of our favorite characters.

The EU

This story is by far superior to any of the new films. With music, sound effects, good voice acting. Who needs more anti films?
#amazing #longdrive #entertaining.

Good Read

This book provided small insights to the world of Star Wars. I loved the storyline and the way the plot unfolded. It was more then an interesting book to listen to.

Scintillating and Fantastic Star Wars tale!

This audiobook was expertly read by a superb narrator. Alexander Adams' voice was unique but compelling to follow intensely for the duration of the story. The characters' voices were done with excellence and panache. He is one of the good narrators but I have heard of other better narrators. The story was easy to follow with a great deal of drama and action. The sound effects were plentiful and top notch. It featured a good deal of alien imaginary cultures. The only snag with this audiobook is that it was an abridged version of the novel. It would have been a thousand times better if it was unabridged. Overall, a wonderful audio experience
