Publisher's Summary

Take a trip to Newbery Honoree Carl Hiaasen's Florida, where adventure is always in the air! This New York Times best seller is a wickedly funny, slightly subversive tale of story of snakes, grizzlies, a missing dad, and a menacing drone.

Some facts about Billy Dickens:

  • He once saw a biker swerve across the road in order to run over a snake.
  • Later, that motorcycle somehow ended up at the bottom of a canal.
  • Billy isn't the type to let things go.

Some facts about Billy's family:

  • They've lived in six different Florida towns because Billy's mom insists on getting a house near a bald eagle nest.
  • Billy's dad left when he was four and is a total mystery.
  • Billy has just found his dad's address - in Montana.

This summer, Billy will fly across the country, hike a mountain, float a river, dodge a grizzly bear, shoot down a spy drone, save a neighbor's cat, save an endangered panther, and then try to save his own father.

"A fun romp that will keep readers hooked." (The New York Times)

Critic Reviews

"Humorous, self-deprecating narration and convoluted exploits will keep pages turning till the satisfying close." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Hiaasen’s latest is richly steeped in the natural world and all the peril it contains, from rattlers to grizzlies. Still, what may be most satisfying for readers are the personal connections Billy makes, whether it’s getting to know his new stepsister or making peace with his dad." (Booklist)

"Hiaasen’s ecological passion shows no sign of abatement, and neither does his faith in kid resourcefulness and family resilience." (Bulletin)

Great kids book

This was a great book for kids 8+. Was a disappointment for those who like Carl Hiassens books about The exgovernor. This book is definitely geared for a much younger audience. We hope he will write more of the hilarious exgovernor and his exploits

Was not what I expected

This book was not what I expected from a Hiaasen book. But I’m guessing this was one he wrote as a teen novel.

Fun story . . . Reader needs research

Not the best book of Hisasen but I Still enjoyed it a lot. His characters are wacky and, somehow at the same time, true to life. And, as usual, there is an environmental theme that makes a point, even in the midst of the fun.

As someone who grew up within 50 miles of Immokalee, FL I was troubled by the mispronouncing of the town. (The “o” is short, not long, as the reader said it). While most people might not know or care, Florida readers would. That’s the kind of thing I’d think he would look up.

Not for Me

If you're ultra sensitive, politically correct, hate your fellow human beings, believe that rich people are evil, if you think Texas is evil and full of big meanies, if you want to listen to more white guilt and shaming, this book is for you. The narrators performance is very good.

Great family book

We choose this book to entertain the family on a road trip. It was a captivating story that made the trip fly by. My husband and daughter were most amused By Billy's bear communications.

Probably great for children

I tend to just buy books by Carl Hiaasen immediatly when I see them. I forget that sometimes he writes for children og young adults. This is one of those, and I've passed 40. I read/listened through to the end, so the story isn't that bad. It did feal a bit tame though.

I started reading it, and switched to audible about half way through. The narators voice felt really odd, and that feeling stuck to the end.

Decent book you are between the ages of 10-14

Carl Hiaasen has over two decades of Florida novels with colorfully eccentric characters richly painted through their reactions to humorously creative, surprising plot devices. He is at his best when he wields the chaos harvested from poor choices and sheer bad luck to bring together radically different characters that bounce of one another. His books such as “Sick Puppy” and “Stormy Weather” are as engaging for their characters as they are for the entertaining plot.

Even if Hiaasen correctly excises anything inappropriate for younger readers, there is no reason he should deprive them of his normal, style. But that’s what this book does. It has neither interesting characters nor an entertaining plot. It’s just flatly rendered good guys and bad guys. Perhaps Useful to children whose fathers may not be in the picture but otherwise mediocre.

This book was not as engaging or fun as previous books I've listened to. It was difficult to stay with it.

CH simply the best writer.

Never been the slightest bit interested in the young uns books, but CH is such a wonderful writer that I can read his. Yes I prefer his adult books & own everyone as he is my favourite author. He is miles ahead of anyone else, wish he could write one a year!

Not my favourite Hiaasen

If you are not already a Hiassen fan i would skip this for one of his earlier books. I think this would be my least favourite.

The master does it again!

Great story, wonderful characterisation and of course Hiasson's special brand of karma!
Loved the reader's soft melodic tones, the only small detraction was annoying 'explitif' overdubbing. (Audible - can you please put language warning on cover instead, leaving the book as written?)

For young adults only

I'm a massive Carl Hiaasen fan, and if you are too, you can skip this one. For any 10-14 year olds wanting some adventure, it's spot on! But if you are after his usual fare, this is not it at all.
