About this listen

A young woman is caught up in a dangerous double life on behalf of her country during World War II in Danielle Steel's thrilling new novel.

At 18, Alexandra Wickham is presented to King George V and Queen Mary in an exquisite white lace and satin dress her mother has ordered from Paris. With her delicate blond looks, she is a stunning beauty who seems destined for a privileged life. But fate, a world war, and her own quietly rebellious personality lead her down a different path.

By 1939, Europe is on fire and England is at war. From her home in idyllic Hampshire, Alex makes her way to London as a volunteer in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. But she has skills that draw the attention of another branch of the service. Fluent in French and German, she would make the perfect secret agent.

Within a year, Alex is shocking her family in trousers and bright red lipstick. They must never know about the work she does-no one can know, not even the pilot she falls in love with. While her country and those dearest to her pay the terrible price of war, Alex learns the art of espionage, leading to life-and-death missions behind enemy lines and a long career as a spy in exotic places and historic times.

Spy follows Alex's extraordinary adventures in World War II and afterward in India, Pakistan, Morocco, Hong Kong, Moscow, and Washington, D.C., when her husband, Richard, enters the foreign service and both become witnesses to a rapidly changing world from post-war to Cold War. She lives life on the edge, with a secret she must always keep hidden.

Great story. You think the book could finish half way through
Captures the sentiment of old fashion family values well if you’re into it, but it does make sense why it goes on and on about it.
Nice resolution.

This is one of Danielle Steel’s best books. They’ve been a bit average the past few years.
I didn’t want this one to end.

Loved it

A familiar wartime spy story woven beautifully with family and relationship anchors. An easy read.

One of Steel' best

I enjoyed the story. The narration was fine. I liked the characters. But oh dear! There were many plot holes throughout and that rather spoiled it for me. Alex's forays into Germany for the SOE was flawed in practicality. Her chap walking for a month with a damaged ankle and broken arm through Germany without meeting anyone en route is silly. Wearing a tight evening dress with a dagger strapped to one thigh and a pistol to the other is likely to be noticed and rather uncomfortable! They were only a couple of the flaws. And the latter part of the story where she is a spy for MI6 was lacking in any tension.

Not quite hitting the mark

loved the first half the 2nd half was like everyday life with nothing happening.

half book

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

This novel just didn’t grab me, very little romance, just not the usual enjoyment I get out of DS books.

Different countries

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

The story line was slow and the time frame moved quickly with little detail to help to grab my imagination. It skimmed over years and didn’t build the characters to a point where I invested in them.

Nothing grabbed me
