Story
In this culmination of his life's work, Peter A. Levine draws on his broad experience as a clinician, a student of comparative brain research, a stress scientist, and a keen observer of the naturalistic animal world to explain the nature and transformation of trauma in the body, brain and psyche. In an Unspoken Voice is based on the idea that trauma is neither a disease nor a disorder but rather an injury caused by fright, helplessness, and loss that can be healed by engaging our innate capacity to self-regulate high states of arousal and intense emotions.

Publisher's Summary
Spiritual bypassing - the use of spiritual beliefs to avoid dealing with painful feelings, unresolved wounds, and developmental needs - is so pervasive that it goes largely unnoticed. The spiritual ideals of any tradition, whether Christian commandments or Buddhist precepts, can provide easy justification for practitioners to duck uncomfortable feelings in favor of more seemingly enlightened activity. When split off from fundamental psychological needs, such actions often do much more harm than good.
While other authors have touched on the subject, this is the first book fully devoted to spiritual bypassing. In the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa's landmark Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism, Spiritual Bypassing provides an in-depth look at the unresolved or ignored psychological issues often masked as spirituality, including self-judgment, excessive niceness, and emotional dissociation. A longtime psychotherapist with an engaging writing style, Masters furthers the body of psychological insight into how we use (and abuse) religion in often unconscious ways. This audiobook will hold particular appeal for those who grew up with an unstructured new-age spirituality now looking for a more mature spiritual practice and for anyone seeking increased self-awareness and a more robust relationship with themselves and others.

This is the best book ever!
I love how much intention author put into this audio book as he recorded himself. Check out also all other books of his. They are all super good. Spiritual Bypassing gives you an idea how there is so many things we like to trick ourself into and thinking how we grown spiritually and dealt with things or outgrown them but in reality we are just distancing ourself away from reality and trauma that is still there. We use number of technic to distance ourself from a pain that is inside us instead facing it. Find out what kind of spiritual bypassing are you using in your life and what to do to face everything and get real.

Great Clarity
A valuable and insightful text highlighting many things we have known to be true, yet rarely ever see addressed by someone who has both the relevant life experience and professional expertise to speak to the issues directly and with authority. Well structured, if a little dry at times, the explanations and unpacking is very easy to follow.

It's SO good! Learned a ton.
If you could sum up Spiritual Bypassing in three words, what would they be?
Emotions aren't wished.
What other book might you compare Spiritual Bypassing to and why?
I've never read anything like it.
Which scene was your favorite?
The author kindly, thoughtfully and intelligently helps us to know that life is not ultimately our fault. It's not our convictions that caused us unpleasantries and when devastation happens, it's not ultimately the universe's way to, "teach me a lesson." There was a gentle cord struck here between nature and nurture and it resonated well with me. Yes, i could choose to do things that increase or decrease my chances of success, health and love but at the same time, random acts of nature occur that put us in harms way regardless. My most favorite idea expressed is clean anger. That it's ok to be angry sometimes and that we have to acknowledge real emotion, find a way to resolve it, and move on. There is no wishing it away with "love and light" and avoiding our own true hurt.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
For sure.
Any additional comments?
So good for the nicey-nice types like me.

Worth reading more than once
Deep, insightful, and richly complex. A must-have for anyone on a spiritual quest and feeling either incomplete still or having difficulty integrating their spirituality with the reality of life. I listened to it all the way through and plan to do it again AND buy the print edition. This is a work to be not only intuitively absorbed but also intellectually studied.

This book has been a breakthrough. A true gem.
I think everybody would find somthing valuable in this book. Robert A Masters shares the content with a wisdom and clearity that is tricking and also extremely relevant. These are dynamics that I see happening all over the world and in connections. To have words put to it and recognize things in myself has been a breakthrough. I can't say how much this means, except that to warmly recommended this to anybody. Might be the best read you've ever done.

Very disappointed
Would you try another book from Robert Augustus Masters, PhD and/or Robert Augustus Masters, PhD?
No!
Would you ever listen to anything by Robert Augustus Masters, PhD again?
No!
Any additional comments?
A friend recommended this book to prove his point of view and felt it would enlighten me. Instead, this book made the hair raise up on my back and sick to my stomach. This book is filled with biased opinions on other spiritual paths, condemning them as failed tools for self awareness that simply is not true. Also filled with judgements against those who are enlightened and happy........saying that we are only acting when we are happy and ignoring the "real underlying anger". He uses words that make his opinions absolute as if his thoughts are actually human nature. While spiritual bypassing does happen, it is simply not true that everyone is doing this, especially the happy ones. What is really sad is my friend is using "spiritual bypassing" with his anger, holding onto his anger unneccessarily, with this guy's Spritual Bypassing advice.
I am a self help junkie in that I love to learn and grow. I have read tons of books. This book is the absolute worst book I ever read and only forced myself to listen in attempts to learn what it looks like to look through a different set of lenses at the world. This book is ugly and sad. If you go ahead and get this book, begin to read, and have a negative pit in your stomach, this is your inner self telling you this book is not for you. If you don't, have fun with this perspective :-/

Deeply Insightful
I have to say this is a rather intense book and well worth the read. In provides a very honest framework that enables you to understand that spirituality and psychoanalysis run parallel paths.

Truth served up cold with plenty of humour. AJ
If you’re able to distance yourself long enough from your ego, through whatever means and humble or at least open minded enough to face some unspoken truths, then this book is for you.
It doesn’t as most of his other books do, have any direct questions for you to work on your issues.
However, it is the perfect start for anyone willing to honestly bring their hidden issues into the limelight from behind the curtain of their new age or old age religious practices or way of life.
Listen to this book and give yourself an honest no-holds-barred appraisal. Ask yourself the questions you’ve been possibly avoiding all of your life and be accountable to yourself.
It’s certainly more liberating to come from behind someone else’s spirituality and live in the true essence of who you are than it is to hide behind it following and avoiding your own.
Either way, you won’t regret one word or paragraph as it will certainly resonate whether you like it or not and believe me, in the end you will like it.
If you can handle these truths you will certainly be ready for his other book “transforming through intimacy” another powerful life changing read, whether your in a relationship or not.

Deep insights, relentlessly narrated
I can only listen to short sections of this book at a time - the narration has a pressure and relentlesness to it that requires full, focused attention, and leaves me tense and uneasy. It's a shame, as the content of the book offers deep insights and learnings, and brings about a level discussion on an important subject - how many forms of spritiuality are actually just forms of wishful thinking, blaming, and not wanting "to be with" the real issue at hand. A paper copy may be more appropriate for a topic that will resonate deeply with many listeners, and awaken uncomfortable yet neccessary realisations about their own practices. And it is that "truthful" nature of the book, why it may serve the reader better to abe able to ingest it in their own time as and when they are ready to open to learn more.
