Publisher's Summary

In the wake of their terrifying escape from Fairhaven Hall, sisters Jess and Hannah Ballard find themselves on the run, pursued by the two most powerful groups in the history of the spirit world.

On one side, the Durupinen, determined to capture the girls and prevent their role in an ancient prophecy that promises to destroy them and unleash the spirit hordes on the earth. On the other side, the Necromancers, ancient enemies of the Durupinen, hell-bent on bringing the same prophecy to fruition. When the girls are betrayed and one of them falls into the Necromancers’ hands, both face decisions with cataclysmic consequences.

Will the lure of power prove too great to resist, or will the bond between the sisters survive this last, most crucial of tests?

Spirit Ascendancy is the much anticipated third and final instalment of E.E. Holmes’ award-winning Gateway Trilogy.

Great story

Loved the story. The narrator does great character voices and accents but...her constant mispronunciation of even the most common words made my teeth itch! Words like "soot" pronounced like "suit." The word "tarot" pronounced with the t at the end, rhyming with "carrot." "Chasm" with the ch sound rather than the hard k sound. Doesn't anyone edit this this stuff before it's released? Almost didnt finish it because of it.

YA for sure

I did stick with this story all the way through the trilogy. The story was intriguing enough to keep me involved. I would say the content is more Young Adult, it should be advertised as such.

I just can’t with this narrator!

I feel like I could have enjoyed this story much more with a different narrator. She tried, you can tell. She had decent accents. But the quality of the sound, the mispronunciations and how I feel I could have seen the characters differently, made this hard.

Narrator fail

Book 1 narrator was great but Jessica Pressy took over and ruined the entire book 2 and 3. She’s quite lacking in the ability to switch between voices without odd stumbles. She also adds a weird attitude to the main characters voice which makes her sound like a snobby child. She pauses at weird points where it’s clear she’s not read ahead. So often the inflection is poor. Additionally there are odd shifts in the volume of the narrator and you can tell where she started and stopped recordings. Lots of normal words are mispronounced in odd ways. Not sure what’s going on but all of this ruined the book.

The books storyline itself is interesting. I do think that they rushed the transition from book 1 to book 2 and then this one. It’s all a bit rushed.

Not crazy about narration.

Narrators voice a little too whiny. Not well at doing male voices. Not crazy about book. Sorry.

Good story. Terrible narration

I make it policy to only write positive reviews, or write none at all. But this performance created an exception for me. First, this book is more "young adult", However, I found the story enjoyable. The narration, as others have written, ruined the experience for me. I really, really hate to call someone out, but please learn words before you take on a reading responsibility. The pronunciation throughout the book of Boundary as "bound-AIR-ee" is troublesome. There were many other mispronunciations. But the coup de grâce was the narrator literally saying "coop DE grass". I almost deleted the books at that point.

Please write more to the story (if you haven't already). But PLEASE get another narrator.

Not bad but . . .

I finally had enough of the female lead’s whiny, immature persona. I literally stopped listening with 8 minutes remaining because I realized I didn’t care if she was eaten by dragons or boiled alive.

I loved it!!

Well written story! Loved the way every last detail came to fruition in the end. The whole series was hard to put down, making you want to drop everything and read on to find out what would happen next. A bit sad to have finished the last of the trilogy though. Hoping to find another EE Holmes book to love next.

It's...pretty good

Couple struggles with this one. Sometimes Jess is such a brat and over dramatic, but then I remember she is a teen. You just want to smack her sometimes. Then there's the narration of this series. the narrator is actually quite good, the volume is the issue for me. For example, if a character wispers, instead of stage whispering and stating it was a whisper, she actually wispers it and you can't hear it. And let me tell you, there's alot of "wispers" and "says meakly" in this series.

Well performed!

Jessica Preddy provides an excellent performance!! Every character was well defined and unique. I loved the story as well!! Definitely worth the read! Highly recommend the entire trilogy!

Better read than heard.

I love this series as far as story line goes but- oh my gosh- the narrator’s accents are nothing short of offensive and deeply uncomfortable. I’m Scottish and live in the U.K. and not one of those supposed accents sound remotely like anything anyone speaks here.
The Scottish and cockney accents in particular are so bad I longed for those sections to pass quickly.
I’m going to return to reading these instead of listening.

Poor

I think these books are for a teenage audience. I persevered and finished them due to the good reviews but they did nothing for me. The narrator killed it to some extent. I’ve never heard such bad accents. The Scottish one was the worst bearing no resemblance whatsoever to a Scottish accent, I couldn’t bear to listen to it.

Dire

The first two books kept some interest going, but the third book in the series has me comatose. Nothing but whingeing and moaning. The storyline has disappeared. Wasted credit. Wish I could return it.
