Die Erzählung "Spiel des Schicksals" handelt von Aloysius von G., der sich trotz seiner bürgerlichen Herkunft schnell am Hofe des Fürsten hocharbeitet und sich unentbehrlich macht. Jedoch hat er in Graf Martinengo einen Neider, der schließlich eine Verschwörung anzettelt und Aloysius als Verräter darstellt. Er kommt in den Kerker, wird aber nach 10 Jahren begnadigt. Nach einem Intermezzo in fremden Diensten kommt er schließlich an den Hof seines ehemaligen Dienstherrn zurück und erhält seine Stellung als Befehlshaber einer Festung wieder.
