Publisher's Summary

A deathbed promise.

Arlyn's quest is simple: Find her father and let him know her mother is dead. After all, Arlyn had promised her mother she'd go. The problem? Her father's people are myths and legends, and he doesn't even live on Earth. But despite a long journey through the mysterious mists of the Veil, finding him turns out to be the easy part.

A dream long buried.

After 500 years, Kai has given up on finding his soulbonded. So when he stumbles across Arlyn after returning from his latest mission and recognizes her as his mate, Kai starts their bond in haste. But he never could have imagined that his bonded is his best friend's newfound daughter. Whoops.

A hidden conspiracy sparked to life.

Though the sight of Kai makes Arlyn's heart pound, she isn't sure she can forgive him for starting their bond without her permission. But her love life is the least of her problems. Her father is an elf lord, and his sudden acknowledgment of a half-human heir reignites the same conspiracy that took him away from her mother in the first place. Now Arlyn and her family must face iron-wielding assassins, bigotry, and her newly awakened magical abilities if they hope to come through in one piece.

Arlyn thought she would return to Earth after meeting her father. Now she must fight to save the family she never knew she wanted.

Enjoyable

Was a nice listen, especially because the story is not heavy handed on the romance like a lot of other fantasy books

Enjoyed this more than expected

As much as I love fantasy, I do worry that many "elvish" stories might be a bit cliché... but this was not that.

I enjoyed the male/female narrative from the different viewpoints, and both narrators had lovely voices - though I can understand if this wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

The story could almost stand on its own. I don't *need* to read book 2 - though I will, as I enjoyed the story and the characters.

Good story but narrators ruined it

I genuinely liked the story, there were afew predictable things but the main plot was still pretty good, with some funny and wholesome moments. I think I'll listen to the next book too.

I just didn't like either of the narrators, especially the guy, his voice could be hard to understand and hard to distinguish different characters. The woman's voice was better but still annoying, she over exaggerated the main characters voice, making a fully grown woman sound like a whiny teenager.

A good story, shame about the narration

Gabrielle de Cuir was annoying beyond belief. The main female character sounded more like a petulant child or a whiny teen than the strong young woman portrayed in the narrative.

If that wasn’t bad enough when the teacher was introduced to the storyline I almost stopped listening: her voice actually made me angry. This is not what I’m looking for when listening to a story.

I very much enjoyed the story and I’m keen for the second book however the narrator is so bad (she also narrating the next book) I think I’m going to go old school and visit the library or my local bookstore.

I am seriously considering canceling my Audible membership as Gabrielle de Cuir narrates many books that are included.

Do better Audible!!!

Great story

Really enjoyed the story as well as the next 7 but honestly will never listen to another audio book narrated by Gabrielle De Cuir, I experienced second-hand embarrassment listening to her, her portrayal of the characters was a real let down in my opinion, Stefan Rodnicki was awesome as usual though

Completely Absorbing

A brilliant beginning to a series that shows depth and complexity to relationships, world development and a clean line of events leading up to a slow burn climax.
Completely intriguing and addictive.

Captivating

Once I started I couldn’t stop. I wanted to know the outcome. At times I found it hard to stay focused as it became mundane when focusing on the bumbling romance and entitled brat that is the daughter. I also had to remind myself that in fiction there is generally a “happy ending “ without confrontation or baggage between two characters who are related after a lifetime of abandonment. I’m always amazed how little real life issues affect characters and how they all suddenly just get over the emotional trauma to live rich lives with everything they could want.
However I was impressed with how B.A. turned the attention to a hidden threat. I’m left wondering what is going on.
