About this listen

Following Kate Marshall’s first year in the mortuary at a north of England NHS hospital, with each month exploring the people she meets, in life and death, as well as her own growing awareness of life behind the veil.

  • Meet Mr X found in his apartment months after his death, Mr X has no relatives that can be traced. He is the longest-serving resident of the mortuary, having been there for almost a year while the search for his elusive family continues. The staff talk to him like an old friend, but Mr X is disintegrating and a decision has to be made soon.
  • Her baby girl has been lost in the 15th week of pregnancy, Mary’s last chance to have a child. Mary won’t allow Abigail to leave the mortuary until she has finished reading a book to her. She visits twice each day, sitting with her baby, reading to her, speaking to no one, until she finally opens up to Kate.
  • A loving husband and father who has died suddenly of a heart attack. Joe is visited by his wife, his children—and his mistress. On the day that all his worlds collide, Kate witnesses how death can finally reveal the truth of years of lies.

Sorry for Your Loss is haunting, uplifting and informative, with many moments of laughter, and shows us that the way we approach death can make life all the more precious.

This is a fantastic book, that everyone should read. However, the audio recording has let it down. Chapters have been repeated, and there were even bits of the reader speaking to the sound techs. If I were the author, I would be very disappointed in Audible.

Fantastic book, terrible audio production

This was a reassuring and informative glimpse into what happens to our body after death. I had no idea that we could visit our loved ones in a mortuary and never knew how much dignity and care the caring staff offer the bodies in their care and to the grieving families. Understanding the impact of covid-19 on the good work of this lady felt tragic and I feel like thanking her for her service. This book made a difference to my morbid assumptions about the purpose and procedures of a mortuary. There was a technical glitch in chapter 11 that doesn't impact the story, but having a heads up will help sort any confusion.

I thought I was just going to read a story about someone who worked in a morgue, buy this was so insightful and heart breaking and interesting and full of information regarding how the UK dealt with particular issues during 2020.

I found this quiet eye opening as to what happens to my body when I leave. as I have faith in God I believe my spirit leaves and my body is just a shell. I really found hearing the other side of covid enlightening. So well written and performed thanks to all involved.

enlightened me to what comes next
