Publisher's Summary

USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and ECPA Best Seller

The author of Radical takes listeners on a soul-searching journey through impoverished villages in the Himalayan mountains, daring them to make a difference in a world of urgent need, starting right where they live.

“Grippingly vulnerable and unforgettable. I could not put this book down.” (Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts)

While leading a team on a week-long trek of the Himalayas, best-selling author and pastor David Platt was stunned by the human needs he encountered, an experience so dramatic that it "changed the trajectory of my life". Meeting a man who'd lost his eye from a simple infection and seeing the faces of girls stolen from their families and trafficked in the cities, along with other unforgettable encounters, opened his eyes to the people behind the statistics and compelled him to wrestle with his assumptions about faith. In Something Needs to Change, Platt invites listeners to come along on both the adventure of the trek, as well as the adventure of seeking answers to tough questions like, "Where is God in the middle of suffering?" "What makes my religion any better than someone else's religion?" and "What do I believe about eternal suffering?" Platt has crafted an irresistible message about what it means to give your life for the gospel - to finally stop talking about faith and truly start living it.

Praise for Something Needs to Change

“Rugged. Authentic. Gritty. Real. Worshipful. There are no other books like this one. I always pick up David’s books with a sense of excitement and, quite honestly, apprehension - because I know that areas of compromise and complacency in my life are going to be exposed. But this book exceeded even my high expectations, for which I am grateful. And so will you be. As David writes, it’s time to run, not walk. Let’s go.” (J. D. Greear, president of the Southern Baptist Convention)

“Extraordinary and challenging. I’ve just never read a book like this before. I am so moved. Bring your full heart to this story and watch how God opens your eyes, changes your mind, and broadens the dreams you have for your life.” (Annie F. Downs, best-selling author of 100 Days to Brave and Remember God

“If you dare to read this book, you might just have an unexpected encounter with Jesus that leaves you weeping on the floor, as David’s experience did. Something changes within us when the seemingly overwhelming needs of the world present themselves simply in the life of a single person. Ultimately, I pray your compassion will be transformed to action.” (Santiago “Jimmy” Mellado, president and CEO of Compassion International)

Great content but distracting performance

Great story with lots of vivid imagery. It felt like I was with him on the trails, seeing and hearing and witnessing all the struggles of the people there. An excellent call to action at the end. The author’s performance was a little distracting at times. He clearly cares deeply about physical and spiritual suffering in the world but unfortunately, that manifested itself in a voice that was almost crying for long periods of time. I found it helpful to speed up the audio during those parts.

Makes you examine your life as a disciple

David Platt explained in vivid detail the journey that he experienced and I felt like I was there. As I listened to this story, I cried...I rejoiced..and I prayed to God for those who are lost. I would recommend this book to all believers in Jesus Christ!

Compelling story ‘interesting’ narration

I enjoyed David’s ability to transport his audience to the other side of the world and journey alongside him and his buddies through the Himalayas. There’s some good questions asked and insights provided from the journey and most importantly those he encountered. I would say the only thing that put me off is whenever there was an ‘emotional’ part of the book the authors voice would go all whiney and I found it very difficult to listen to - personally I think the beauty of a book is it allows you to decide how you feel about certain situations but instead of being somewhat neutral it felt incredibly forced and put me off to the story.

David Platt raw

I've seen some complaining that he was too emotional while reading this. Honestly if there's no emotion telling this story there's a problem. Maybe those that find him annoying while reading this should pack up and go serve some of those people in the Himalayas. Great book. Well worth the listen. Well worth the challenge.

This book is extremely powerful. If you listen to it and are not changed then something is wrong. I pray that your heart will be opened as you listen to this.

Humbling, heartwrenching and soul shifting

If this book doesn't move or change you, something's wrong. I found myself crying one minute, smiling the next, and reflecting/searching for my own life thereafter. An emotional rollercoaster that leaves you breathless at the bottom of the mountain. Thank you David for taking this journey and sharing it with all of us.

First Platt book? You will love this...

Ultimately this book contains very little new information for those who read all of David Platt works. Even the stories are from five years ago, and many of the story do appear in other books. for those who haven't read much of David Platt, it will be a compelling read. I listened to this book but I would actually recommend reading it versus listening. ultimately it has provoked me to think about things, and that is always good to reevaluate your life... somebody who has read pretty much every David Platt book, and have been led through his teachings along with many others served in world missions and dedicate more of my resources towards world missions. so I think this book would be good for those that are just coming awake to the problems in the West, and I'm thinking of using this book for a teen Bible study.
