About this listen

Adella is facing the dawn of a new year and the end of her twenties - and she's in a psychiatric unit recovering from a mental breakdown. A decade earlier, her life held such promise; she had every option in her hand. How did it come to this?

As we go back and walk with Adella through her twenties, she searches for her grand purpose through love, career and travel. At her side through the tumultuous highs and lows is her best friend, Jake, facing his own challenges and opportunities. They both know the future must have something better to offer - but why does it also always feel, in the bottom of their stomachs, as though something bad is going to happen?

Raw and revelatory, Something Bad is Going to Happen is a heart-stopping work from one of Australia's most exciting writers. Dealing with the weight young women bear through pressure, anxiety, rejection, this is a generation-defining novel - wise, witty, deeply compelling.

This book provides a surface level insight into mental health and modern early adulthood relationships. The author has delivered an engaging story, however it is clearly absent of real experience. Chapters jump back and forth in time, which I thought was a little gimmicky and didn't really add to the storyline.

Beautiful and honest insight to mental health

Jessie, this book was amazing, thank you for making the invisible visible and the unspoken spoken. So many of us suffer from the same affliction. What I have always loved about your work has been listening to you and others at Mamamia not being afraid to talk about mental health without taboo or an Illness that could be caught. Being able to be yourself in a workplace feels like a honour, I can see why you feel inspired to be you and be challenging and inspired. Please write again, I love the depth and honesty of your writing. Congratulations 👏

Adella's story is nothing yet everything like my own, its completely relatable. beautiful insight into mental health, not only for the person experiencing the struggle but for the people around them who seldom get enough credit. I feel this book will help people understand and empathise with one another

Absolutely devoured this book

this is an honest and sometimes confronting look into a certain kind of depression. I found it hard at times, but only because it made me remember what it was like when those feelings consumed me. this will help you feel seen and/or understand

honest

At first I was really disappointed not to hear Jessie Stephen’s read her book. In my head I could hear her voice, I knew they were her words so I found the voice distracting. The story was a little slow in the beginning and I had to come back to it a few times but then, I was obsessed with it. The twists and turns. Hoping nothing else could go wrong for Adela being knowing it would. Loved the ending! Great book! X

Slow but addictive

This book tackles mental health issues in a way that shines a light on the deep dark places we who live there try to hide!
It’s deep and dirty and real and scary. But also needs to be shown this way to help others understand what this is like.
Thank you for this book.

Awesome
