Publisher's Summary

Adella is facing the dawn of a new year and the end of her twenties - and she's in a psychiatric unit recovering from a mental breakdown. A decade earlier, her life held such promise; she had every option in her hand. How did it come to this?

As we go back and walk with Adella through her twenties, she searches for her grand purpose through love, career and travel. At her side through the tumultuous highs and lows is her best friend, Jake, facing his own challenges and opportunities. They both know the future must have something better to offer - but why does it also always feel, in the bottom of their stomachs, as though something bad is going to happen?

Raw and revelatory, Something Bad is Going to Happen is a heart-stopping work from one of Australia's most exciting writers. Dealing with the weight young women bear through pressure, anxiety, rejection, this is a generation-defining novel - wise, witty, deeply compelling.

Awesome read

Jessie, this book was amazing, thank you for making the invisible visible and the unspoken spoken. So many of us suffer from the same affliction. What I have always loved about your work has been listening to you and others at Mamamia not being afraid to talk about mental health without taboo or an Illness that could be caught. Being able to be yourself in a workplace feels like a honour, I can see why you feel inspired to be you and be challenging and inspired. Please write again, I love the depth and honesty of your writing. Congratulations 👏

I wanted to like this

It’s well written and raw but not my cup of tea. With the main theme being depression it is slow and melancholy. It took me a lot to make it to the end.

Slow but addictive

At first I was really disappointed not to hear Jessie Stephen’s read her book. In my head I could hear her voice, I knew they were her words so I found the voice distracting. The story was a little slow in the beginning and I had to come back to it a few times but then, I was obsessed with it. The twists and turns. Hoping nothing else could go wrong for Adela being knowing it would. Loved the ending! Great book! X

Couldn’t get into it

I really wanted to love it but I couldn’t get into it. Didn’t find it interesting from the start and then I was just bored

The rawness

Such a real and raw account that you can only write if you’ve lived it. So beautifully written with a rawness that made my heart hurt with a familiarity that you wish you couldn’t relate to. Such a clever insight into both sides of the pain of depression. Feels weird to say I loved it, but I did.

Loved it

Beautifully written, interesting perspective on mental health. Adella as an insecure early-mid twenties female is so relatable. I really enjoyed this book, couldn’t put it down.

So good you won't want to put it down

I loved this book more than I expected. I wondered if the heavy subject matter would make it feel unpleasant or hard to get through, but I was wrong. It kept me hooked the whole way through, and not in the anxiety-inducing way that some fiction tries to capitalise on at the expense of the reader. The narrator had such a calming and reassuring way of speaking, and the words were so poetic in an engaging, accessible way. The story moved at a good pace, and everything was relevant. I felt connected to the characters, and the descriptions of inner challenges and struggles felt so authentic - even the parts I couldn't entirely relate to. But there was so much there that many of us can relate to, and even though it didn't exactly depict a happy mental state, I was pleasantly surprised by how much of a relief it was to lose myself in the thoughts of the characters and enjoy the richness of their inner world. I finished this book in 3 days and can honestly say that it made those days better.

Wow I can relate

What a great book that covers a lot of different aspects in life, especially for females like me around that age of 30. Jessie you hold so much talent. I find you and the Mamamia team so inspirational, thank you.

I had to stop

Normally I'll hear a story to the end, but this one I couldn't concentrate on. The characters and plot didn't grab me and I struggled through a portion of the book and in the end gave up.
