As a lady's companion, Clara Hartwright never receives much attention from anyone. And that's precisely how she likes it. With a stormy past, and an unconventional plan for her future, it's far safer to remain invisible. But when her new employer is invited to a monthlong holiday at a remote coastal abbey, Clara discovers that she may not be as invisible as she'd hoped. Publisher's Summary
First appearances deceive in the newest charming and heartwarming Regency romance in the Westcott series from beloved New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh.
Abigail Westcott's dreams for her future were lost when her father died and she discovered her parents were not legally married. But now, six years later, she enjoys the independence a life without expectation provides a wealthy single woman. Indeed, she's grown confident enough to scold the careless servant chopping wood outside without his shirt on in the proximity of ladies. But the man is not a servant. He is Gilbert Bennington, the lieutenant colonel and superior officer who has escorted her wounded brother, Harry, home from the wars with Napoleon.
Gil has come to help his friend and junior officer recover, and he doesn't take lightly to being condescended to - secretly because of his own humble beginnings. If at first Gil and Abigail seem to embody what the other most despises, each will soon discover how wrong first impressions can be. For behind the appearances of the once-grand lady and the once-humble man are two people who share an understanding of what true honor means, and how only with it can one find love.

An Honorable and Worthy Listen
Go ahead and try it. This complex romance starts off pleasantly and, and without guile, develops into a rich story of interesting plots, characters and even more interesting romance. The Hero and Heroine are quite flawed at the outset yet what made this story engrossing for me was how each character noticed his or her misconceptions immediately and worked through them in an honest, way. The story is not burdened with misunderstandings and angst-ridden mental turmoil. At the end of the day, this story tells about how character is defined by actions, not words.

What is this
I have read and listened to other books by this author and enjoyed them thoroughly, but this book actually switched between boring me and making me angry. These characters make decisions that make no sense to me or to the characters themselves. The female protagonist is unlikeable in the extreme and the author seems to think that she must summarize the entire book every time she switches point of view. I feel like a quarter of the book is useless repetition that far exceeds what one would usually expect. Thankfully the narrator is wonderful as always. Or perhaps not thankfully, since I listened to this book as long as I did in large part because of Landor’s talent.

Finding Love
Loved this next book in the series. Abigail Westcott has been somewhat lost for the last 6 years when it was discovered that her father was a bigamist and that she after 18 years was illegitimate. When her brother Harry finally makes it home from war with the help of Lt. Colonel Gilbert Bennington she wants to stay and help. As she gets to know Gilbert she likes him better. When he explains some of his life her brother Harry suggests that they marry so he can gain custody of his daughter. A beautifully written story with an even more beautiful ending.

Author repeats....
The storyline is ok. What I didn’t like and drove me crazy is that the author repeats the same happenings 3-8times. I understand that some stories needed to be retold especially if it is a series so that readers that didn’t read the previous book would be undated/understand. But this author repeats almost everything.... If no repeats, this book might be only be a chapter or two. DON’T BUY! Waste of time and $$$, more than that your SANITY!

Another Heartwarming Novel by Mary Balogh
This heartwarming novel by Mary Balogh really had a different slant from others. The hero, Gil, is scarred accross his mouth and chin. He's intimidating at first sight and unfriendly - expecting people to goggle at him and be repulsed. Abigail is. Gil has had little experience with gently bred women and none of it very good.
There follows the one step forward, two steps back forging of a relationship. They do come to care for one another, but very slowly and without much demonstrative affection.
They really come together in a court battle to get custody of Gil's daughter from his first marriage. All the Westcott family comes to support them in court. Earlier some Westcotts enlisted the aid of Gil's natural father and he addresses the judge. The judge rules that the little girl be returned to her father by her grandparents.
It's not often that I read romances with both main characters having difficulty expressing themselves even to each other. By the end, however, I was hopeful that even they would have their happily ever after.

Confusion of thoughts
Mary Balogh has the ability to write the confusion of thoughts that all people go through when working out the problems of life. She helps us realize the human condition does not change through the passage of years, and we are the same as people in the regency period.
