About this listen
'I had a big cry—then I kept going'
Growing up in the Canadian Rockies, the mountains have always been home for Jenny Tough. Travelling the world, she's always discovered commonalities with mountains—and mountain people. Her major project is to run solo and unsupported across a mountain range on every continent where indigenous mountain people live isolated from the outside, urban world. Running solo and unsupported comes with obvious logistical as well as physical challenges, but running is also a common language—all people around the world do it—and it has always helped build connections across barriers of language and nationality.
Solo is the account of one woman's mission to run solo and unsupported across mountain ranges on six continents—overcoming obstacles, conquering fears and finding the joy in achieving her goals absolutely alone.

I'm sure Jenny has inspired countless young women to follow in her footsteps and I have to say she inspired this 30 something year old to get back out on the trails! Can't wait to watch the documentary!
Inspirational and epic adventure!!

I did struggle with some content though. Particularly her attitude to the Gendarmarie in the Atlas mountains. 'When in Rome..' is a good attitude to have and Jenny refused to acknowledge that things are different for women in different countries and that would therefore affect her when she was there. It felt quite disrespectful of a different culture (even though we ultimately disagree with that culture's attitudes). The Gendarmarie were ultimately trying to protect her because if something happened to her in their town, they would be in serious trouble. They weren't trying to be a**holes. I understand her frustration but still, it was disrespectful.
Also the blasé attitude to the dangers in New Zealand. People can die out in the wilderness here and she did not take that seriously. She definitely got by on luck at times.
All in all, an epic feat and one very few people could ever achieve, or even consider is a good idea!! Well done Jenny :)
An epic feat

Jenny’s determination, strength and ability shone through her story telling and through her experiences as an ‘athlete’. Loved hearing the ups and the downs of her journeys whilst feeling frustrated with the male species at times.
Looking forward to watching, hearing and reading more of her adventures after thoroughly enjoying her book. Thanks for sharing your world with us.
Amazing adventurer, inspired

Very easy and flowing listen, written in a totally down to earth and easy to relate to tone.
I read lots of this genre and this is one of my favourite. Found myself equally admiring her for the the seriously difficult challenges she went through, while being totally entertained at the same time.
Particularly love the New Zealand Southern Alps section. A bit of light relief from the extreme hardships of all the other mountain ranges.
Totally inspirational
