Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Soldier Spy by Tom Marcus, read by Jason Langley.

In the boot were six homemade pipe bombs, all linked to detonate at the same time from a single call on a brand-new pay-as-you-go phone found on the target.

Special Branch also found Chinese Type 56 assault rifles with eight full magazines of ammunition. His target was a local school. He planned to attack two coaches of teenagers returning home after a school trip to France. Approximately 60 children, their accompanying teachers and their waiting parents. He was going to kill them all.

'My world was dark, no colour, no right or wrong and no backup. People like me exist to fight those no one else dares face. I wasn't the last resort; I was the only option.'

Tom Marcus was recruited by MI5 in the wake of the 7/7 attacks on London. After five years spent undercover as part of a covert British Army special operations unit, he offered the Security Service the edge they so desperately needed. Following months of intensive training, Marcus was thrown into a world of relentless, unimaginable pressure, a never-ending struggle to prevent terrorist atrocities on our city streets, foil devastating strikes against the nation's infrastructure, and keep our country's secrets safe from foreign spies. Split-second decisions carried life or death consequences. And not all his colleagues would survive the fight.

In this explosive firsthand account, Soldier Spy lifts the lid on the war being waged by MI5 to keep us safe in our towns and cities for the first time - a blistering, visceral insight into life on the front line against terror, revealed in never-before-heard detail.

It was a job which would inevitably exact a heavy price. But when it came down to it, Marcus knew he didn't have a choice.

'Some people join the service out of a sense of duty, some out of wanting to do some good by removing the evil. I did it because it's all I knew. I'm a hunter of people, and I'm damn good at it.'

Dramatic

Although some of the content is interesting, too much hype, bravado and arrogance comes through. The writer even calls this out as something his peers and employers think about him and you’d have to agree. The work these guys do is amazing, but I think articulating in a more pragmatic than dramatic & hyped up way would have resulted in a better read/listen.

Exaggerated and dragged on.

Whilst it started well, it got more and more difficult to pay attention. It just seemed like a one-sided account of someone who was overly cocky and arrogant. It seemed like this attitude was also carried into his work which probably is why he was jeopardised on many occasions throughout his dramatised career. People with a intelligence/security background should steer clear of this novel.

terrible

awful, awful book. wanders away from the plot with long winded monologues about how great he is. Anyone with military or security service backgrounds will see straight through this rubbish. I should ask audible for my money back. I can even finish it. its terrible

Dangers of PTSD

Interesting first hand account of an MI5 agent and the tense surveillance missions he would go on. The later part of the book though delves into the PTSD he acquired while undercover. Well worth a listen but the story does become incredibly personal and a touch sad.

Don't be fooled

Gave up on it in the end. If you're looking for a book that will open your eyes to the hidden world of MI5 espionage and methodology, this isn't it.
It is a book about a self obsessed man, completely devoid of humility, who believes he is always right and everyone else is wrong, and never hesitates to remind you of this.
More swear words than a redneck barbecue dont add to the narrative either. Tried to persevere to the end but had enough of the f's and c's, and unrelated rambled events, the majority of which I'm confident are imaginary.

A badly written fairytale

The vast majority of what’s written here is pure fantasy. The passage about urinating on the policeman in a Scottish pub is an insult to the intelligence. There are plenty of decent books on the security services that are actually true. This is 90% BS.

Don’t waste your money.

Dissapointing, another factual fantasy

Why would an author go to great effort to describe one aspect of their life, but completely skim over significantly related (so he says) other? Worked for MI5? Potentially. Worked for 'Special Ops' in UK Army? This is where the story falls apart. Firstly the term 'Special Ops' is not generally used within the UK Army - typically the terms UKSF, SAS, SBS, SRR or at a push 'the Det' are used. This so called aspect of the authors career is skimmed over, and as he suggests he was not SAS, we can assume he was not SBS also - which leaves 'surveillance' either SRR or 'the Det'. The author suggests he was selected for this work - which is strange as these units are typically entered through a voluntary selection process - 'you select yourself' (or not) during their rigorous selection processes.

If you wanted people to believe you were 'hand picked' and recruited from this unit you would would think you had nothing to lose by saying so, especially if you were about to 'lift the lid' on MI5 Surveillance. Ultimately, those Special Forces units and their history are pretty much open source these days after other authors have blown the lid on them. This aspect, this lack of detail suggests hints of Walter Mitty fantasy at times regarding the authors so called 'Special Ops' background.

Sadly, the author fails recognise the link between their unfortunate childhood situation and links to their ultimate diagnosis with PTSD.

Potentially entertaining to your average Joe, but the endless self importance drone on like a Duracell battery.

Good yet frustrating

The story content and performance is compelling. However his lack of responsibility of his actions and people blaming for his behaviour wears thin.
