Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Soldier Spy by Tom Marcus, read by Jason Langley.

In the boot were six homemade pipe bombs, all linked to detonate at the same time from a single call on a brand-new pay-as-you-go phone found on the target.

Special Branch also found Chinese Type 56 assault rifles with eight full magazines of ammunition. His target was a local school. He planned to attack two coaches of teenagers returning home after a school trip to France. Approximately 60 children, their accompanying teachers and their waiting parents. He was going to kill them all.

'My world was dark, no colour, no right or wrong and no backup. People like me exist to fight those no one else dares face. I wasn't the last resort; I was the only option.'

Tom Marcus was recruited by MI5 in the wake of the 7/7 attacks on London. After five years spent undercover as part of a covert British Army special operations unit, he offered the Security Service the edge they so desperately needed. Following months of intensive training, Marcus was thrown into a world of relentless, unimaginable pressure, a never-ending struggle to prevent terrorist atrocities on our city streets, foil devastating strikes against the nation's infrastructure, and keep our country's secrets safe from foreign spies. Split-second decisions carried life or death consequences. And not all his colleagues would survive the fight.

In this explosive firsthand account, Soldier Spy lifts the lid on the war being waged by MI5 to keep us safe in our towns and cities for the first time - a blistering, visceral insight into life on the front line against terror, revealed in never-before-heard detail.

It was a job which would inevitably exact a heavy price. But when it came down to it, Marcus knew he didn't have a choice.

'Some people join the service out of a sense of duty, some out of wanting to do some good by removing the evil. I did it because it's all I knew. I'm a hunter of people, and I'm damn good at it.'

Fantastic story. Superb narrator.

Fantastic story. Superb narrator. Unlike any story I've heard previously. Really insightful and interesting. I really enjoyed the narration, perfect for this audio book.

Dramatic

Although some of the content is interesting, too much hype, bravado and arrogance comes through. The writer even calls this out as something his peers and employers think about him and you’d have to agree. The work these guys do is amazing, but I think articulating in a more pragmatic than dramatic & hyped up way would have resulted in a better read/listen.

Fictional

This book is fiction and not even slightly believable as anything other than such. I.e. apparently Irish undercover police are sent into dangerous situations without any support whatsoever despite being so instantly and unmistakably recognisable that everyone present reacts to their appearance, the IRA immediately decides to kill them, and MI5 surveillance officers feel compelled to smash a beer bottle into their heads and urinate on them as the only possible means of saving the officer’s life. Moreover, despite the latter assault on a ‘known’ undercover officer the IRA blithely continue their top level meeting.

secret squirrel

A great insight into the events that happened behind the scenes in the UK.
The truth behind the glamorous secret ops that are far from glamorous.

An authentic and compelling story

I enjoyed listening to Tom’s experiences, which never felt sensationalized or embellished. A courageously open piece of writing that gave a unique insight into his life, and the kind of work that MI5 does.

Exaggerated and dragged on.

Whilst it started well, it got more and more difficult to pay attention. It just seemed like a one-sided account of someone who was overly cocky and arrogant. It seemed like this attitude was also carried into his work which probably is why he was jeopardised on many occasions throughout his dramatised career. People with a intelligence/security background should steer clear of this novel.

terrible

awful, awful book. wanders away from the plot with long winded monologues about how great he is. Anyone with military or security service backgrounds will see straight through this rubbish. I should ask audible for my money back. I can even finish it. its terrible
