Who wants to be a superhero? Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic. And now she has some decisions to make. The heroes are on vacation. Really. The wedding of Dane and Annabeth (Danabeth) is over, the team has caught their villain-of-the-month, and Hope thinks everyone deserves a break from the cycle of training and public-relations appearances. So except for Ozma and Grendel (who've decided to return to adventures in Oz) they're all enjoying the sand and the sun in Littleton. But then Shell vanishes - her quantum-neural link with Hope and Shelly severed - and Ozma and Grendel return with ominous warnings that something is happening back in Chicago.

Things are relatively quiet in the great metropolis of Chicago. Astra, a.k.a. Hope Corrigan, is able to breathe a little, to hang out with her friends, and even to attend classes (where her professors are starting to think she is a myth). But Blackstone is loading more training and responsibilities on her, and converging events threaten the compromises she has made to balance her superhero career and student life. Worse, a new super villain has come to town, and it will take all of Chicago's capes to defeat the threat of the Green Man - if he can be defeated at all.

Story
It's been just weeks since the state funeral for the Sentinels, Atlas, Ajax, and Nimbus, lost in the Whittier Base Attack. Astra, Hope, is recovered from her own injuries. At least physically. Mentally... not so much, but she feels ready to actively wear the cape again. Which is good since, between the revelation of her short-lived relationship with Atlas and her virally pungent public comments on the current political debate over breakthrough registration (the National Public Safety Act), she needs to raise her profile. But she's better now, steady, ready for anything. Or is she?
Publisher's Summary
After serving two years in a federal prison, Karen Hashimoto is out on parole and eager to put her criminal past behind her. No easy task, since she's also the former supervillain known as Crushette. A chance encounter leads to an unexpected opportunity, and she is recruited as the newest member of the city's premier team of superheroes: The Good Guys.
Now Karen has new teammates, a new code name, and the daunting responsibility of trying to be the hero everyone thinks she can be. Becoming a champion for truth and justice is going to be rough, especially for the ex-girlfriend of the notorious Doctor Maniac. Karen will have to do everything in her powers to keep her past from ruining her future. It was so much simpler being the bad guy.

I think the reader had a fav part
if I was going to pick one thing it would be the lack of emotion early on .... or the ability to bring me into there emotional state, so latter when they were exp strong ones I felt like I was just being told what I should be feeling. when the Gil's giggled / bonded was OK or the first bit of her talking to the lady at the buss stop, but not how it side tracks into being about men looking at her boob's , I really wasn't expecting the sex in this but it was the strongest part with the bf.

Graphic Suprrhero Sex
This book would have been perfect without all the 'extra' details. I had to skip the last half of chapter 13. It isn't that it didn't work in the story line, I just didn't expect it to because adult erotica. Other than that one chapter, the rest of the book, and characters were great.

Robotic Narration
Where does So Not a Hero rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I do not have the superhero gene, but this book sounded interesting and I decided to give it a try. I like the story quite a lot. However...
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator reminded me of the TV rabbi on Seinfeld. Her slow over-pronunciation of each syllable was robotic and sounded almost like it was computer generated much of the time. It distracted so much from the story that I almost stopped altogether. The story was good enough to keep me going.

fun read once you get back that bit in the middle
it was an ok superhero romp. Not the best but ok What I feel kind of detracted from it is that almost entire chapter in the middle that felt like fanfiction. After a while I started wondering when they were just going to get on with the story

Male power-fantasy with a female protagonist.
Any additional comments?
This is an odd one. Generally I liked the book, it's a first person narration with an interesting enough narrator. It's just, well, the women are written like men and the men are written like either angelic paragons or irredeemable perverts. Any man in this book that isn't the perfect male specimen with out fault or flaw, is actively trying to rape the main character. And there are rape scenes in this book but with little or no consequence to the story at large. The character being raped responds with the same reaction as someone getting a parking ticket.
Honestly on the elements alone I would say this is a bad book. But the book is first and foremost a superhero story with spectacular fights and amazing feats. And it does that part well enough (Although there are MANY descriptions of the main character's naked ass during the fights). The really poor characterization is not a huge problem because that's not really the what the book is about. Granted any time the story tries to dip it toe into the deeper end of the character pool it's painful but these moments are few enough that it's not an over all painful read.
Generally this book is like reading a comic from the 90s. Lots of spectacle and a good deal of titillation. Plot an characterization are an after thought at best. If you a male comic book fan it's not horrible. Women and people who enjoy character driven stories should stay very far away from this book.

Something to drink.
Any additional comments?
This was a really good and engaging story but the only problem I have is with the performer.
Please, audible, or whoever produces these things, get the narrator a glass of water and have them lean AWAY from the microphone when they drink. I am getting sick and tired of hearing these people swallow almost as much as you hear them speak.

Written by a Guy
Overall, I liked it. The performance was very good, it made it so I didn't immediately tune out because it was just so... this was probably written by a guy kind of feeling (update: it IS written by a guy). It seems like he has good intentions as all the objectification and manly pride bits seem to looked down upon. However, if I had been reading it physically, while I might have enjoyed the story overall there is just so much overt objectification that it probably would have made me put the book back on the shelf within minutes. But the performance, with the tired and frustrated tones ,that any person who has been harassed can relate to, sold it for me. I might buy the sequel but if I do it will not be a physical copy, nevermind, I will not be buying the sequel at all. At some point (chapter 13), if you reach it, it devolves into a male fantasy. I am in the mist of trying to find the end of it. I would have stopped listening to the book BUT I want to know what happens with the plot outside of all the meeting and sex scenes. Later, unfortunately, I am done with this book and am going to try to return it now. Chapter 13 was just a bit too much for me.

A poor romance novel
I have trouble with Harlequin novelist trying to write in the sci-fi / fantasy genre. This is a book that fits the category porn for housewives. There's even a whole chapter of a sexual encounter with emphasis on the man's member. I don't mean to sound prudish, and I think tasteful romance is a vital part of any book... But if you have a good story to tell you can send the characters to the bedroom and fade to black, then continue with your good story. This book had potential, but the authors fetish with boners detracts from any plot development she was going for. I recommend spending your credits elsewhere.

Pretty good but a bit inconsistent.
Overall it a pretty good book.
At times it can be very descriptive and at other times just skips over the details.
.
It was entertaining but lacked consistent logic within the world.
Every five minutes it mentions how the main character can't use furniture because she is so heavy that it will shatter but somehow she uses the elevators, and the flooring in all the cafes and restaurants is able to hold the weight without any issues.
Seems like a small thing, but the author constantly mentions it.

A nice change on the Hero story.
I liked this book and enjoyed the narration. I wouldn't say it was a clever plot but it was one that kept me entertained and once finished I looked for the next book but that wasn't available at the time but is as I write this review. I can't decide whether to just read it or wait for the audio book as that added significantly to my enjoyment of the first. When I read this book I was reading a lot of hero books and this was a nice change from the normal, if you like books on heroes then I would say get this and if you can the audio version as well, if you only like traditional heroes then think hard and check the samples both audio and book but I still think you should give it a go.
