Det är den kallaste vintern på decennier och kylan slår hårt mot det lilla jämtländska samhället Svartviken. Byns uppskattade luciafirande står för dörren, men själva lucian, sextonåriga Ebba Lindgren, dyker inte upp till sin egen kröning. Hon lämnade hemmet för att gå de femhundra meterna till kyrkan, men kom aldrig fram. Nya och gamla konflikter blossar upp när alla plötsligt misstänker alla. Efter fem dagar lägger polisen i Östersund ner sökandet efter Ebba. Dagen därpå hittas hennes lärare brutalt knivhuggen till döds i sitt kök. När dagarna går utan att den lokala polisen närmar sig en lösning kallas Nathalie Svensson, Johan Axberg och de andra medlemmarna i Rikskriminalens gärningsmannaprofilgrupp in. Det blir en svår utredning där de snabbt inser att de måste nå in i byns innersta för att ha en chans att lösa fallen.
