In this eerie, enchanting compilation, Stephen King takes listeners down a road less travelled (for good reason) in the gripping 'Riding the Bullet'. Terror becomes déjà vu all over again when you get 'That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French'. 'LT's Theory of Pets' will make you stop and think before giving a dog to a loved one. Story
A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror. Turn off the television - in fact, why don't you turn off all the lights except for the one over your favourite chair? - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. I think I can make you believe in them. Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk.

Story
Editors Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax put the call out to horror writers and editors of extreme stories, the hardcore stuff that breaks boundaries and trashes taboos, the transgressive tales you can't "unread" (as Chuck Palahniuk says). Some of the stories you'll find here are loaded with very graphic descriptions of violence, sex, and depravities, while others may contain only one shocking moment of brutality. In others, the hardcore aspect may be less graphic and subtler than you might expect.

Story
There was a new shop in town. Run by a stranger. Needful Things, the sign said. The oddest name. A name that caused some gossip and speculation among the good folks of Castle Rock, Maine, while they waited for opening day. Eleven-year-old Brian Rusk was the first customer and he got just what he wanted, a very rare 1956 Sandy Koufax baseball card. Signed. Cyndi Rose Martin was next. A Lalique vase. A perfect match for her living room decor. Something for everyone.

Story
The house looked right, felt right to Dr Louis Creed. Rambling, old, unsmart and comfortable. A place where the family could settle, the children grow and play and explore. The rolling hills and meadows of Maine seemed a world away from the fume-choked dangers of Chicago. Only the occasional big truck out on the two-lane highway, grinding up through the gears, hammering down the long gradients, growled out an intrusive threat. But behind the house and far away from the road: that was safe.

Story
Suspenseful, frightening, and sometimes howlingly funny, a story of invasion and battle, survival and heroism. It is a story of how men remember ... and how they love. In Derry, Maine, four young boys once stood together and did a brave thing. Something that changed them in ways they hardly understand. A quarter of a century later, the boys are men who have gone their separate ways. Though they still get together once a year, to go hunting in the north woods of Maine.

Story
Castle Rock is a small town where word gets around quickly. That's why Scott Carey wants to confide only in his friend Doctor Bob Ellis about his strange condition: he's losing weight, without getting thinner, and the scales register the same when he is in his clothes or out of them, however heavy they are. Scott also has new neighbours, who have opened a 'fine dining experience' in town, although it's an experience being shunned by the locals; Deidre McComb and her wife, Missy Donaldson, don't exactly fit in with the community's expectations.

Story
To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine, was just their hometown: familiar, well ordered for the most part. A good place to live. It was the children who saw - and felt - what made Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one's deepest dread. Sometimes IT reached up, seizing, tearing, killing....

Publisher's Summary
Six Scary Stories, selected by Stephen King.
Winning stories from The Bazaar of Bad Dreams Hodder-Guardian competition. The number one best-selling writer Stephen King presents six gripping and chilling stories in this captivating anthology: 'Wild Swimming' by Elodie Harper. 'Eau-de-Eric' by Manuela Saragosa. 'The Spots' by Paul Bassett Davies. 'The Unpicking' by Michael Button. 'La Mort de L'amant' by Stuart Johnstone. 'The Bear Trap' by Neil Hudson.
Stephen King discovered these stories when he judged a competition run by Hodder & Stoughton and the Guardian to celebrate publication of his own collection, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. He was so impressed with the entries that he recommended they were published together in one collection.
Listeners beware: the stories will make you think twice before cuddling up to your old soft toy, dipping your toe into the water or counting the spots on a leopard....

Meh, won't recommend
I was hoping for a better read but of the 6 stories only 2 left me interested and keen to keep reading. I skipped through most of the others as they were tedious, even being as short as they were. Overall a disappointment.

Six spine-chilling short stories
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, Six stories of around 20 minutes in duration each to give you something to do on the bus or train.
What did you like best about this story?
All the stories are good. My personal favourite isn't the actual winner but they're all worth listening to.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
There were several performances as the stories are both narrated but the characters are performed by several people. None of them gave a bad performance.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really. They are bite-sized stories and they can be listened to in one sitting but are probably better appreciated one at a time.

Great set of stories
It’s like a really good collection of creepy pastas with great performances. Well worth the current asking price (£2.59 as I write this), though too short to use a credit for. Definitely worth a listen, especially if you enjoy short horror stories.
