Publisher's Summary

A memoir-in-essays from disability advocate and creator of the Instagram account @sitting_pretty Rebekah Taussig, processing a lifetime of memories to paint a beautiful, nuanced portrait of a body that looks and moves differently than most.

Growing up as a paralyzed girl during the '90s and early 2000s, Rebekah Taussig only saw disability depicted as something monstrous (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), inspirational (Helen Keller), or angelic (Forrest Gump). None of this felt right; and as she got older, she longed for more stories that allowed disability to be complex and ordinary, uncomfortable and fine, painful and fulfilling.

Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in a body that doesn’t fit, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complications of kindness and charity, living both independently and dependently, experiencing intimacy, and how the pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life.

Disability affects all of us, directly or indirectly, at one point or another. By exploring this truth in poignant and lyrical essays, Taussig illustrates the need for more stories and more voices to understand the diversity of humanity. Sitting Pretty challenges us as a society to be patient and vigilant, practical and imaginative, kind and relentless, as we set to work to write an entirely different story.

Marvellous!

Congratulations on this passionate, vulnerable, insightful work of love, Rebekah. It feels an honour to hear the intimacy in the way you communicate so eloquently, stories and experiences I relate to in so very many ways. From your looong time Instagram fan, Cait Ruth.

Beautifully written and very engaging

I loved listening to this book. The author’s writing is wonderfully descriptive, lyrical and inviting, and really draws you into her experiences of different aspects of life - growing up, relationships, work, identity. The narration is engaging and emotive and I feel like I ended this book with a deeper understanding of the ways in which ableism creates barriers for people.

An absolute must trad. Educational. Raw. Heartbreaking and Sweet.

Thank you Rebekah! Your words have lit a fire under me and my ongoing goals to be LISTENED to and that I DESERVE space in this world as a Disabled, Queer, Non- Binary, POC. That my words, experiences and story matter. So much of what you expressed, shared and opened up about in these words of yours are things I’ve felt word by word and more! Thankful to you and thank you to you for this book. Thank you for challenging the status quo, recognising your privilege while highlighting the marginalisation and barriers you’ve had to overcome to get where you are today! It’s absolutely extraordinary the similar thoughts we’ve had growing up and wondering if life would ever amount to anything when you’re young and complexly disabled and chronically ill. Rebekah, I don’t know if you’ll ever really read or see these words but YOU GIVE ME HOPE (not in an eww #inspoporn kinda way) but I GENUINELY everywhere how I survive it to another birthday, to another milestone, to another goal this body of mine - let alone be successful, happy and thriving. So thank you for your resilience, your story and for sharing it so beautifully with the world. With love and best wishes for you, Otto & Micah’s wonderful, beautiful life together! 💖 (from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺- Akii (@adventuress.akii)
