Publisher's Summary

On a splendid August afternoon, Susanna Osbourne is introduced to the most handsome man she has ever seen...and instantly feels the icy chill of recognition. Peter Edgeworth, Viscount Whitleaf, is utterly charming - and seemingly unaware that they have met before. With his knowing smile and seductive gaze, Peter acts the rake; but he stirs something in Susanna she has never felt before, a yearning that both frightens and dazzles her. Instantly, she knows this brash nobleman poses a threat to her heart and to the secrets she guards so desperately.

From the moment they meet, Peter is drawn to Susanna's independence, dazzled by her sharp wit; he simply must have her. But the more he pursues, the more Susanna withdraws - until a sensual game of thrust-and-parry culminates in a glorious afternoon of passion. Now more determined than ever to keep her by his side, Peter begins to suspect that a tragic history still haunts Susanna. And as he moves closer to the truth, Peter is certain of one thing: He will defy the mysteries of her past for a future with this exquisite creature. All Susanna must do is trust him with the most precious secret of all....

Contains mature themes.

Best so far

I have read three of the four books in this series and liked them all but this one I loved. Mary Balogh's romances are not full of angst but just full of love and other deep emotions, which makes the characters very appealing and the books easy to enjoy.

Great listen!

Very enjoyable, sweet, intriguing, and passionate . Most importantly more realistic than many historical romances. I definitely recommend. Well written and as always love the narrator.

Why the change in Susanna's accent in this book?

I enjoyed listening to this book and it flowed well. The only thing that puzzles me is why Susanna's accent has changed? In the first two books Susanna had a scottish (??) accent yet in her own book she has the accent of a polished english lady??? Slightly confusing if you ask me but overall still a great book!

Too Slow....but nice suspence at end

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Story was predictable until the end. However that was hours later.
Not up to Balough's other books.

Good Story

I was looking forward to Susanna Osbourne's story. She wanted a Duke so bad. So it is cute how this story develops. All three of these books so far has the same theme, strong woman, man pursues woman until she catches him. Rosalyn Landor makes the stories good.

Great sleeping material.

Much .......toooooo.............long. I did find that the monotonous tone of the story read was the best “fall asleep” material I’ve listened to for a very long time, even better than meditation! As always, Ms Landor performance was great, even contributing to the sleep mode of this story.

Enjoyed the book but...

My problem is not with the book. I did enjoy it even though the series from many authors in the Romance package seem to become cookie cutter stories. My wish is that the authors and producers will begin to see that we must have a female and male voice for the characters. No matter how good the narrator is the male done by a female always sounds like a little round fat man rather than a handsome viral man.

Dash it all!

Aside from the favorite expletive of Whitleaf (the hero)--"dash it all", which must be the author's 19th-century version of 'golly jee', or 'gosh', this was an enjoyable, and sometimes surprisingly sensual tale. Because. 'dash it all', they actually did the deed before they were betrothed! But then there were inevitable chapters of doubts and misgivings that had to be resolved--a resolution which included uncovering an interesting mystery where it turned out that typically stuffy English nobility family members were actually having clandestine extra-marital sexual liaisons. Maybe they weren't so different from us after all!

As always, love her stories.

This story is interesting, with an unexpected twist toward the end. I became thoroughly immersed in it. As always, the combination of this author and narrator makes for pure enjoyment.

Easy to listen to and follow.

He came into his title at a very young age, surrounded by five sisters and mother. It is not surprising he is so comfortably around women and has learnt to say all the right things. He is cosseted, protected and generally fussed over as a very valuable person all his young life. The only males he had contact with were his Uncles, but they let him down badly. He has been drifting along in life, finally meeting his cousin gave him some sort of a normal family experience. She ran away at the age of twelve, was a Charity pupil at a girls' school, then teacher. She has been looking after herself for a long time, has a purpose to her life. The story is about how two such different people come to understand each other. Naturally there are some twists and turns as the story progresses. Still believable and easy to listen too, no need to fast forward, no gratuitous sex.
