Publisher's Summary

Become a master of small talk and great first impressions!

According to recent sociological research, an average person interacts with approximately 50,000 people throughout their life. The number is even higher if you live in a big city.

Did you ever wonder what kind of impression you leave on the people you meet? Have you ever been introduced to someone only to run out of things to say after the initial “hello”? Do you struggle with small talk and often find yourself in a “awkward silence” situation?

Luckily, there are methods and techniques you can use to improve your small talk skills, boost your confidence, and make a great first impression every time.

This book has the answers to these important questions:

  • How can you use small talk to make a great first impression?
  • How can you overcome fear and shyness in everyday social interactions?
  • How can you avoid that awkward silence and keep the conversation going?
  • What topics do you use and what to avoid when making small talk?
  • What are some graceful ways to end the conversation?

Even if you’re naturally a person who thrives in social interactions, this book will take those skills to the next level.

Establish connection with people you meet with small talk, avoid awkward silences, stop struggling and start to enjoy social interactions everyday starting today.

Sharpens interaction skills

Simple Small Talk" delivers so many practical lessons for any level of English speaker. As a native English speaker it might be easy to take for granted or forget the power of small talk since we use it as a tool to transition into and out of daily scenarios. This book brings greater awareness to not only the techniques of small talk, but also a greater understanding of the associated human behaviour. These are particularly helpful lessons for someone keen to sharpen their interaction skills as small talk is not always about talking, it also has much to do with social judgement and perspective. Highly recommended! Worth my 5 stars!

Worthy book to expand your little world

I'm generally shy and tend to avoid small talk because it doesn't feel comfortable or natural to me, but this book has helped to shift my mindset a bit and put the concept of small talk in a new light where I can appreciate the potential benefits I may be missing out on by avoiding small talk situations. I realized by listening to this book that there are many possibilities and opportunities that are being presented to us day by day. It is through the practice of constantly improving ourselves and coming forward towards expanding our own little world that we attract the many possibilities of a more colorful and purposeful life.

A compassionate book for the socially anxious

This audiobook will help you to get you to the next level of conversation skill and I have found all these methods are very much effective and quite easy to follow. It provides effective confidence-building strategies that speakers can try when participating in a range of different social interactions. Very basic knowledge but outstanding real world practical use. I have read the best books in this topic and this one’s pretty simple in comparison. However, I find it unique, that's why I just kept listening. Things I’ve heard before wrapped in kind and genuine words to help those who are struggling to communicate everyday with people and strangers. If you are sometimes socially anxious, if you are overly conscious, if you are afraid of what other people might think, and if all that is hindering you to enjoy even simple social interactions, then this is the book that cares about all that. It’s the most compassionate book I ever read on the art of conversation.

Confidence booster for young adults

It’s a great book for young adults I think who may need some guidance and some self-esteem boost to overcome shyness and some self-limiting beliefs.I got a lot from it and got some helpful tips on starting conversations. Got a lot of tips on real good ideas for icebreakers and what to say during small talk. Helpful and full of useful advice and techniques to help with conversation skills, small talk, overcoming shyness, and knowing what to say. I particularly found the parts about being more assertive and how to make a connection within a few minutes of small talk really useful. I was always worried about people’s first impression of me and can’t bring myself to believe that that shouldn’t matter because it does. It is not often that we get another shot at connecting with someone, whether romantically or for other purposes such as networking, friendship, business or career related. Often, everything depends on that final few minutes where it starts and where it ends. Sometimes it’s shorter than that. Less than a minute or a few seconds, your chance is gone. So, before you miss a lot of chances everyday to connect to the people you intend to connect with, you better listen to what Gerard Shaw has to say in this book. It is enlightening, inspiring, confidence boosting, and richly informative. Thankful for the knowledge, wisdom and confidence I found in this book.

Everything starts with hello

This one’s a good listen if you want solid advice on how to improve your social skills in simple small steps. Starting with striking a conversation with a stranger, or somebody who can potentially be your friend, an ally, a business partner, and the possibilities are endless. Everything starts with the first hello. If you’ve been procrastinating on stepping up your game and since now you still haven;t talked to someone you imagined having a great conversation with for a long time, it’s time to give this audiobook a chance to inspire you and equip you with the skills on how to say hi, to carrying on a conversation, to saying goodbye. Literally step by step but really felt natural because more than the communication skills, this audiobook pays really hard focus on authenticity and living and doing things with a purpose. Deeply profound in such a small book.

High appreciation for this Audible

Appreciating this audio-book that tells me what I need to know and how to apply them to everyday life. The author has a good friendly style of writing that makes you listen without even realizing how much he’s teaching you. Because you learn from his stories, you learn from his wisdom and you learn from his own experience. I really thought nobody would bother to write something for us who are silently suffering from social anxiety over a small encounter such as small talk. Finally, an audiobook for someone who needs a pair of ears to know that we needed help in communicating too. It looks like the author had listened long enough, and responded to the need of those who need it most, so he wrote this book. Extremely thankful. The steps outlined in this book are laid out in an easy to digest manner and the author does a wonderful job showing practical applications. Thanks Gerard.

Lighthearted and engaging

Simple, clear and engaging with very helpful explanations and relevant examples. I especially like that it is not just tips of things to say but explores the art of conversation in a lighthearted simplistic way. The author will make you consider and be more aware of other people's perspectives and motivations which can lead you to rethink your own mindset.
Shaw's enthusiasm for human interaction shines through and his positivity and enthusiasm turns small talk from an unnerving prospect into an opportunity to be taken and learnt from. A good pace, well spoken and easy to listen to and understand.
