Publisher's Summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

Emma’s darkest secrets are buried in the past. But the truth can’t stay hidden for long.

Emma is a loving wife, a devoted mother…and an involuntary killer. For years she’s been hiding the dead body of the teacher who seduced her as a teen.

It’s a secret that might have stayed buried if only her life had been less perfect. A promotion for Emma’s husband, Alex, means they can finally move to a bigger home with their young son. But with a buyer lined up for their old house, Emma can’t leave without destroying every last trace of her final revenge…

Returning to the shallow grave in the garden, she finds it empty. The body is gone.

Panicked, Emma confesses to her husband. But this is only the beginning. Soon, Alex will discover things about her he’ll wish he’d learned sooner. And others he’ll long to forget.

I beg you- don’t

I had to return this book as I could only get 4 chapters in before wanting to scream at both the narrator and writer. I decided spending 8 hours driving in silence was way better than listening to this absolute drivel. Such a whiny poor me character as main person.

Easy listener

If you could sum up Silent Victim in three words, what would they be?

-

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

-

Have you listened to any of Elizabeth Knowelden and Steve West ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

-

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

-

Any additional comments?

This was an easy listen on my commute to and from work. The narrators did a good job.
I particularly liked the approach to each chapter being narrated in the voice of the person it related to within the story and also the switching back and forth in time. One major disappointment - the ending was lame. The whole way through I kept thinking there was going to be a plot twist at the end that I wouldn't see coming. Unfortunately it was not the case and the story ended exactly the way it setup for throughout the plot. As someone who loves crime, mystery and thrillers it left me wanting. That's why I have given it an average score. Definitely nothing to write home about but if looking for a time filler this is your book.

Masterful story

A fabulous tale of deception and intrigue with some twists I saw coming and some I didn’t. At first the constantly jumping timelines annoyed me but I soon settled in and adapted easily. Not the most suspenseful book I have read but certainly not predictable.

Would have rated four stars if narrator was better

The story kept me engaged but it is probably a better read than audio book due to the irritating narration by Ms Knowelden. She speaks with a soft, breathy, sometimes whispering voice. That is not good in an audiobook. It's sometimes hard to hear but even more distracting is the irritating sound of breathy tones through a mechanized device. I am always amazed when professionals do not know to project and even moreso that the technical staff does not catch this problem. Mr. West's narration was good.

Learn from my mistake

I listened to over half of this (enough that returning it feels like a cheat), hoping it would get better, but it didn’t. Learn from my mistake and save ten hours of your life. First, there’s the story: a young teenaged girl is sexually assaulted, and it’s never even really addressed. I can understand it not being dealt with in the context of the story, but it’s like the author didn’t quite understand that even a “consensual” relationship between a teen girl and a much older teacher is hugely problematic. Then, the girl (now a woman) is casually gaslighted by every other character in the book “for her own good,” except the ones who serve no discernible purpose in the story (there are several of those). I hated everyone, and they were not complex characters that were fun to hate. They were all just dreadful.

Finally, a minor quibble: the writing, ugh. “‘Why do you say that?’ she asked, seeking information.” Yeah. We know she’s seeking information. She asked a question. Give us some credit.

would make a great movie

fast paced, good plot, lots of twists and turns, and on themes that resonate for today with all the news about the Weinsteins of this world who manipulate women into participating in their own exploitation. Performance is really good if you like British accents as I do, and the voices are very much on point, as the main characters voices are very distinctive. Tho I have a problem ongoing with male narrators that try to speak in women's voices when a female is part of their dialogue, they tend to try to speak in falsetto that no woman on earth sounds like and it's distracting and can be annoying, something you have to look past. Would prefer they just speak in their own normal voice tones. This is an involving and dimensional psychological thriller, one of those you can't put down/stop listening to. Started to guess the end revelations a little bit ahead but this is so well done overall you still let yourself be carried along by the forward movement of the plot and the dimensional characters. Not too heavy, just a very well done thriller with psychological insights, which is a fine thing. I do hope it's turned into a film, I think it would be great.

I had to extra suspend my disbelief

Too many leaps

To really enjoy this story, you have to make a few large leaps of faith and accept some facts without explanation… something that I was not completely able to do.

The two largest being:

1- Just accept Luke is a maniac with no clarification, explanation or any details about what makes him tick and why. He’s just nuts.

2- Don’t question why Alex just doubts his wife from the get-go. It never felt right to me – no confrontations, no discussions, just suspicion and mistrust from the start.

Still, I like this formula of psychological thrillers featuring unreliable narrators and a small cast of characters and so overall I enjoyed the story.

Silent Victim

Silent Victim keeps you guessing. It had my attention from the beginning and kept it all the way through. The antagonist in the book is my one knock on the story as he (and the storyline surrounding him) is not totally believable. The rest of the characters and story make up for it though (in my opinion).

Love English Mysteries

I really enjoyed this book. I like the back and forth among characters in each chapter. The narrators were super. It’s a rather simple mystery - girl crushes on teacher; girl marries and has a child; perfect life until ....

Disappointed

I have enjoyed Caroline Mitchell’s “Ruby Preston” series but this was a boring storyline. And the narrator Elizabeth Knowelden sounded as she was whispering through the entire novel. Not worth the purchase. Hopefully there isn’t another book with the same characters.

I enjoyed the story this book offered, characters in the story were really great but it was just hard to tell who was talking at times and switching back and forth between timelines was just annoying.

I enjoyed this book, and unlike a lot I read I didn’t guess the twist until the very end. Good narration as well. I would read / listen to another from this author

Dull.

Can’t understand anyone giving this book 4/5 - it was very slow, dull and predictable. I found the characters, particularly the main one, Emma, to be whiney and rather pathetic - I quickly decided I didn’t care what happened to her! I persevered to the end, but was glad when it was over. The storyline was weak, and the narration boring.

Terrible!

The story was predictable, unrealistic and none of the characters were likeable or relatable. The constant mention of the eating disorder was poorly represented l. The narrators made every word sound like was a cliff hanger. sorry!

Interesting story

I enjoyed listening to this book. It kept you guessing until the final few chapters as to who was in the wrong. I don't understand exactly about Emma's mother. I don't want to anything to spoil it for others so can't explain what I mean properly.
I enjoyed most of the narration except for the male trying to imitate a female's voice. Men's imitation always make women sound soppy and stupid.
I would definitely recommend this book. The story is easy to follow despite a lot of twist, turns and going back and forth between past and present.
