About this listen

One of the UK's brightest and best comedians takes an incisive look at race and belonging.

But where are you really from?

Phil Wang has been asked this question so many times he's lost count. So, finally, he decided to write a book about it. About how to be from two places at once.

Phil was born in the UK, in Stoke-on-Trent to an English mother and a Chinese-Malaysian father. Three weeks after his birth, the Wang family returned to his father's hometown in Malaysia, and at age 16, Phil was uprooted once again, to return with his family to the UK.

In Sidesplitter, Phil reflects on race, belonging and cultural cachet, bringing his trademark cynicism and wit to topics that range from food and comedy to empire and colonialism.

Phil tells a story that contains a lot of him and a lot of the larger world. A great, relaxing, positive tone.

Thoughtful and positive

This book is enjoyable for many reasons, but particularly if outsider stories are of interest to you. Laugh out loud funny, insightful, written and performed with a light touch but also sometimes bitter sweet.

Funny, profound, clever.

Phil Wang delivers hours of quirky storytelling in this ebook. Listening to him and laughing while I took the dog for a long walk each night made me not hate picking up his poo quite as much. (The dog's poo I mean, not Phil's). Thanks mate from me and my neighbours who live on the dog walk route.

Phil Wang-tastic

This book was such a joy to listen to - Phil's wittiness cuts through with stories of growing up in two worlds arranged by themes. I truly enjoyed the vivid narration down to the accents attached to the characters that form part of his stories as well as the injections of history, culture and race (amongst others). Much laughs were had with some heartstrings pulled when the family theme comes into the forefront.

Classic Phil Wang wittyness - wonderful listen
