Publisher's Summary

Michael Asher served in Northern Ireland with the Paras at the height of the IRA campaigns of the 1970s. He witnessed the result of using highly motivated assault troops in 'peacekeeping operations'. His depiction of the strengths and weaknesses of the British Army's elite airborne forces comes from his personal experience of what it was like for ordinary soldiers.

From the Paras to the SAS and then service with the Special Patrol Group in Northern Ireland, Michael Asher's military odyssey eventually led him to leave the forces for a new life in the Sudanese desert. This is a unique military memoir of a precocious and perceptive young man who joined the toughest army regiment in the world.

Poor book that goes no where

Really poor book that dances around various parts of the writers life. The book starts well but ends up going no where.

Would not bother getting it as the title is miss leading and there are better books out there

A good book

One of best books I’ve listened to in a while, although I did expect more ( a lot more) from the SAS part of the story.
His experiences in Ireland were very interesting.
Recommended.

I don't think I have ever listened to someone so far up their own arse and looking down at everyone around them.

Great Narration

Well read story of his life. I found the last stage pretty depressing though. Excellent language, well written and interesting.

misleading title

very little about the sas I feel it's misleading and the cover doesn't have anything to do with the book in my opinion,I know the old adage don't judge a book by it's cover, but still!
on the positive side was interesting to hear about army life in the 70s.

Not as in depth around the sas or red caps as.

I'd have hoped. More about being part of a special branch of the ne police force.

What a book...

Highly recommend it. A wonderful performance by the narrator. The story was very bright and sometimes very dark.
