Story
The Spanish House is a mixture of designs, Georgian, Gothic and Moorish, as if whoever started it had simply got bored. It has long been known as an architectural folly to locals, and is now nearly derelict to boot. When its reclusive owner dies intestate, the Spanish House is left to his city-dwelling niece. For Isabel, recently widowed, the house is a potential lifeline - the only hope she has of providing for her two children without having to sell her most treasured possession.

My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it’s far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should’ve been a fresh start for us both.

Wasn’t sure but...
It took a while for me to warm to the narrator, at first it was like she was singing the story but she really grew on me and was excellent with accents. A really heart warming story. Jojo Moyes captures family dynamics so well.

Slow and unsatisfying. Just too much going on and much of it uninteresting. The reveal isn't worth the wait and the ending is overwrought.

Family rupture and repair
A good story true to Jojo Moyes' style of interweaving stories across generations and painting a glimpse of life juxtaposing the old with new. She captures the complexity and misunderstandings that rip families apart.

So So JoJo
This is JoJo Moyes' earliest novel and does suffer in comparison with her later works. The story is a fairly standard family drama based around upper middle class colonial types living a life of decaying gentility in rural Ireland and nursing a few bitter secrets. I must admit I didn't really warm to the fox hunting horsey theme and was slightly aghast that a North London vegetarian teenager could change her principles quite so easily. Her mother is irritatingly daffy and the grandmother is very hard to love, but despite this the story is reasonably interesting and I stuck with it to the end. The narrator was good but I did get a bit weary of the plummy accents. If you haven't read a JoJo Moyes book before, I recommend you don't start with this one.

good
the story is good - characters are largely well drawn (although kate is a bit of a cartoon character) but the book really comes alive in the parts dealing with hong kong in the 50s. In my opinion Moyes is at her best in dealign with the war/post war era (this book is probably not as good as ship of brides but still worth a listen).
Where the book is weaker is in the reading - the actress in question can come across as a bit one dimensional . That said it is still a good listen.

Another brilliant storyline from Jojo Moyes
Would you listen to Sheltering Rain again? Why?
I would definitely listen to it again as it was such an entertaining story and I could really identify with all of the characters
What was one of the most memorable moments of Sheltering Rain?
Too many to choose from!
What does Judith Boyd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
She brings warmth and fun to the telling of the story. She interprets the characters of the story superbly.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both....I balled my eyes out when the old horse died!!!
Any additional comments?
I have loved all of Jojo Moyes books that I have listened to. She is a superb storyteller and keeps you hooked the whole way through her books. I have listened to every one of her books on Audible now and am looking forward to some new ones coming through.

Not very enjoyable
Having just loved Me Before You and The Girl You Left Behind, I couldn't wait to hear this story. But I'm afraid I was disappointed. I found the characterisation somewhat shallow and the story a little trite. I also found the narration rather patronising and glib. Maybe this was what spoilt it for me to some extent.
